Incubating French Black Copper Marans

Hi Matt!

The first candling/weigh they had all lost some weight - even the two I don't think are good. Tonight I'm candling and weighing the eggs so I should have some idea if it's a waste of time or not. :). Have you candled your newest eggs yet or all Marans?

I'll let you know.

Well...ya got me curious....

I had to take a look tonight.... My Orpington cross' didnt look good. Out of 9....I think only one is making progress. 3 others are a maybe, Ill recheck later this week. I check 5 of the BLCM, and they atleast look like someone is home inside...

Hey Matt!

Well all but one egg lost weight again, even the 3 I know aren't good so weighing isn't working out like I thought. One even gained weight...odd. I removed only one Marans egg that I could tell was bad, like you said the other ones looked like someone may be home.

The buff Orp eggs I can see progress in about half...I removed two definite no's. I'm at day 14 today. Hatch in a week with my fingers and toes crossed!!!

I may weigh and candle right before lockdown.

Let me know next candling to see if anymore progressed for you. I'm happy your BLCM are doing well! The Orps lets just hope they do something for you...how old are your hens and rooster(s)?

Hey Kristie...
so with the weighing of the eggs....is there a chart that shows what the % of weight change should be over time?

Once these eggs are done, I have one more shipped batch of eggs coming.. Then Im done with hatching this year. I think all my birds are around the 10 month old mark.

I've read weight loss should be anywhere from 12-16% weight loss. For me, I'm just not seeing the benefit when the bad ones are still losing the same amount of weight as the good ones. Lot of work and time so far, like you had mentioned previously.

I'm done after this hatch too. Shouldn't have to hatch for another year. I have several roosters I need to send to the auction.

The age on your flock sounds optimum to me for fertile viable eggs.

Agrees. I weighed and marked air cells on my first hatch and noticed that both progressed the same despite viability/development.

I already have shaking eggs and heard a loud chirp!!! Whoo-hoo!!
Yayyy!! That loud chirp just gets ya, huh? Gave me a BIG grin and a jaw drop first time I heard it on day 21!
