so the older models work better? I had somethin else to ask, I think, but I kinda forgot. So tired...

If anyone is looking for a crock pot for the heating element - the ones with the removable crock and a aluminum liner that heats it - should have the heating element in the band, like the one I used.

I figured that they would be the Newer crock pots that used the metal band. I just recently tore apart a Black and Decker Rice cooker, and it had a 1/2 inch round metal tube, within a LEAD?? casing , it is a 120 volt heating element, and it is 500 WATTS! I don't know when I will have a use for that much heat, but I kept it any way. I also have a 52 watt 120 volt heating element, and it is a thin 2"x 3" rectangular flat flimsy thing. I kept it, but I probably wont have a use for it either.

The crock pot heating element I used had to be 8-10 yrs old. You should be able to find out from B&D what the metal tube's casing is - I'm guessing it's cast iron. If it is - you could build a nice cabinet incubator

. You never know you might need it. lol
I picked up a old Westinghouse roaster today at Habitat Resale - it was cheap and it works so down the road I might take the heating element out of it - for a cabinet incubator. I already have two other big roasters so, this one really is extra. lol

That's cool. I looked up Westinghouse, and it seems that they are antique 1950's slow cookers.

Well the metal tube is most likely cast iron. But it is surrounded by some kind of metal. It'll be easier for me to take a picture of it. It really doesn't matter, but I just don't think it is lead.

That sounds about right. The roasters work great for big buffet dinners. I have used them for wedding receptions and graduation partys - I have a neighbor that has 5 of these roasters I have borrowed in the past so, it's not like I need 3. Maybe next year I will build a really nice looking cabinet incubator but for now, what I have - is working.

Here's the pictures. The first 3 are of the cast Iron tubing with the mystery metal casing, and the last picture is of the 57 watt heating element. They are both 120 volt heating elements, but I am wondering about what will happen when/if I wire them there is no direct spot for a hot or neutral wire, so I guess I am going to have to "wing it." If I do try wiring them.

Here's the small heating element, it is actually a 57 watt heating element.

The small aluminum 57 watt one - might work great in a cooler incubator. The big one looks like it's painted prb so, cast iron won't rust? When I was wiring the crock pot element it had 3 wires on it and I didn't know what was what so, I hooked it up one way and pluged it into a zip-strip and it would trip it. Process of elemination I found what I needed to use it.

I haven't heard of a Zip Strip, is it necessary, what is it's purpose. Could you explain, and give me pictures, or directions to see what a Zip Strip looks like.
