incubator ideas! post your ideas for home made incubators, whether they work or not~

yeah ours is mixed as well and its the only one that came out like that but we had no clue what was in the mix. but those 2 types narrows down the breeds mixed in quite a bit. We have 2 that have a few feathers on their legs and one that is bearded with no fuzzy feet nor a fuzzy top of head. the ones with fuzzy feet are different as well. one is a very pale yellow with no other markings and the other has the same color as a red sexlink. so they are truly barn yard special. our wyndotts came out pretty well.

Everyone has seen those iddy bitty cheap 2 dollar coolers at walmart and dollar general right? Well I bought 2 of them today as well as 2 porcelain lamp holders. I already have one so that makes 3. My parents and little brother roooooled their eyes anddd SIIIIGHHHHED in exhasperation. Mm hm. It's a hobby and one I like doing. I've been LAAAAZY this summer, and bored as heck. But now I'm back and with my 3 little coolers I'm determined to make 3 awesome incubators UNDER 20 DOLLARS! Yaay! I hav a lot of junk laying around, since I rarely throw things away that can be used one way or another in an incubator. Now don't get me wrong, I have 3 lovely incubators but 2 of them cost me an arm and a foot one way or another. I've started the first one tonight.

By the way, this was made by a rather mathematically, scientifically, and common-sensically LACKING teenager(me). (If you're smart, you can tell by the way I write) but optimism is KEY! Unless you can follow directions well. ;) reading word from word is SO much easier than glaring at pictures. KEEP ALL INSTRUCTIONS! THEY HELP NO TO TAKE OUT THE POWER!

Things you need:

(1) porcelain lampholder - $2 w/out chain or xtra plug.
(1) small steyrafoam cooler with lid - $2.50 at most - walmart was 2.29 but I got Dollar General ones.
(1) small desk fan - church sale - $1 - used the chord too, but difficult to tell what's the HOT wire.
(2) 25 or 40 W bulb - regular lamp size, be careful - $1.97 - one's an extra. They last a LONG time, but are easily broken(nailed one of mine with a paint brush 2 days ago. T-T)
(1) dimmer - $7~8 for a cheap one.
(8) wire caps - do u like getting zapped? I don't. you get 3 with ur dimmer and u can find some more.

:TOOLS:

(1) - or + screw driver - already had. - you can use a butter knife if you don't have one, or a drill.
(1) SHARP box cutter - to cut steyrafoam it has to be *giggles* RAAAZOR sharp. A perfection or artists' knife works too. - dunno cost, maybe $3? Took one of my dads(I've had it over a year, but he don't care)
(1) extra chord - you can find one in somewhere - $0 cost - it's for extra cutting wire.
(1) pair of sciscors for cutting wire. $1, but I'm sure everyone has a pair.
(1) roll of aluminum tape. For a window*optional*.

~ Okay, well the actual "Ingredients" were about 15 bucks, give or take a dollar. LG clunkers cost about 41 bucks at TSC. The only good thing about them is the windows and the heating element. Which reminds me... you also need 2 pieces of similar plastic or glass. If you wan a window. I'm putting one in

I will post a link to my pictures tomorrow when I upload and finish them. WHENever I get around to it. I really should make a new thread... this one is a bit lengthy. I'll do that in a bit. Also, don't be suprised if you see these exact words on another website.

yeah that is the cheapest and simplest way to build one then move up to the big coolers!

Ah, yes... incubators are great and all, but the best you can get is a Brinsea or a Muscovy duck. I have 2 GQF incubators I'm using now, and btw I hatched ducks AND chicks together a couple days ago. I could never get it right before, and I know how.

I got one of my incubators to work, I'm proud to say~ it has a WH thermostat in it. I'll have to test it out soon, for real. I started my chickens that hatched yeaterday in it and due to not enough power outlets and a window A/C, they were shoved in wth the duck eggs.

Btw, I now have wood shop and as out end of course exam we can free-style anything we want to make! I'm sure y'all have an idea of what I wanna do? Lol, but now I can use all my dad's saws and tools and such, etc. so I can make a knock-off GQF style incubaor, just shorter. Perhapse I can also make an automatic egg turner as well since I still have a little giant turner motor in great condition. Sound like a plan? But it won't be until next spring. I have to research this, since I recently discovered where I lost my brain. Q_Q

I have learned a substancial ammount of information from this forum alone, and from other BYCers. I'll take pics along the way... butit WILL be a while.
