swab the umbilicus area with a 1% solution of Betadine and place the chick back in the bator to dry.
after he is dry and the yolk sack starts to turn brown you can swab it with iodine to help dry it out.

I put a bowl in there with a dry paper towel in the bottom and a warm damp paper towel on top of that.

I don't have any iodine or betadine. Is time in isolation good or do I need to be making an emergency run to get some?

External Umbilicus

Occasionally a chick hatches with an external umbilicus. This umbilicus can
vary in length from 1 to 3 centimetres, and appears very ‘meaty’. Usually the
umbilicus will become black in colour, shrivel up and drop off. Generously
cover the umbilicus with Betadine cream, to protect the area from infection,
and leave it. Close monitoring will be required. Any sign of redness or infection
will require the chick to been seen by a veterinarian, and likely a course of
antibiotics will be prescribed.

Chicks that have had an assisted hatch or external yolk will need careful
monitoring for the next three weeks in case of additional yolk sac problems, or
umbilical/naval stalk infections

She is online, I was just badgering her with questions! I just passed my first 24 hour mark of being on lockdown....patience sure is a virtue!

Betadine is a brand name for a range of povidone-iodine (PVPI) topical antiseptics produced and distributed by various manufacturers.

Just remember always With OUT pain relief in meds for chicks

What about rubbing alcohol? Is that ok or a no no? I have a tube of bacitraction but no betadine...if this happens to me...
