Incubators Anonymous

We want to start raising our own "meat chickens" next Spring. I remember seeing broiler chickens that u cull about 9 weeks old or they get to large and have a heart attack or something like that. So, that would be ok, but how the heck do you breed ur own if u have to kill them all?? I don't want to have to purchase new ones each year, or it kind of defeats the saving $$ purpose.

You use a Cornish roo on Plymoth Rock hens. Hatch the eggs for the fast growing chicks.

So I have yet to hatch but already Im addicted to watching my incubator to be sure it doesn't change and I am stuck on finding the perfect place to keep it.

At the moment I have moved the incubator to my room and i put it in a Styrofoam box as i was concerned the box it came in want allowing enough air to circulate, but it makes it so big. Will it be safe to put it in the cardboard box it came in with the foam surrounding it or will it not allow enough air to circulate when I have eggs in it? The instructions say to use the packaging box and foam but as you can see with the picture below it doesn't exactly allow much air around and at night I have to close it up with a book on it (to keep t closed) to keep the temperature at 47.5C.

In the box, is that enough air circuation?

And then at night to keep it at the right temperature (as I lose 3c) I have to close it up. Will this allow enough air to circulate?

I'm looking for a good incubator with automatic turning that will hatch about a dozen or so eggs but not cost an arm and a leg.
Please help me hatch-aholics!

If you want auto turning, I don't think you can get by for less than $100 or so.

My brother is raising one of his granddaughters. Said GD wants an incubator so she can hatch a few eggs. My brother and I have both searched and we can't find anything with auto-turn for less than $100, and he doesn't want to spend that much.

If anyone knows of anything, I want to know too!

I think 47.5 C it too high you will cook the eggs not hatch them mine runs at 37.9 C. and that is just a tad high Adjusted for my incubator running a little cool. i hatch right at 21 days.

That temp is almost 107F if you have eggs in there for any length of time they are cooked. Sorry.

I keep mine at 37.3 but that is what works in mine. I have other thermometers to confirm temps and adjust accordingly. Do you have another way to check the temp?
