Incubators Anonymous

It has a thermostat, but it's not a smart thermostat. It will maintain a temperature so long as there are no outside variations. BUT if you change any of the environmental elements (humidity, warm, cold) the 'thermostat' is just too primitive to control the temperature to accommodate for the atmospheric changes.

SO, that said It is easier for me to train my thermostat on the hottest part of the day so it won't overheat my eggs while I am at work, then wrap a towel, socks or other laundry around the perimeter seam for added insulation at night when the house temperature drops 10 or 15 degrees so I can avoid turning the knob every day. The added insulation increases the temp by a degree or one and a half. I take the towel off in the morning when I go to work. !Turning the knob on these Little Giants is fine surgery to me. Very miniscule movements change the temperature a LOT. It's not something you can adjust and walk away from. If you touch that knob with eggs inside, you better have two hours to hover over it to be sure nothing's freezing or cooking! (just my experience).

I see.
Thanks for the info. I won't be able to use a Little Giant. =)

Congrats!!! Soooo jealous!!!!

Thank you! =)

YaY! I am happy for you! I know how you feel!! Just like all those dancing happy faces!!! :)

We need a new thread called 'egg math' I just can NOT get it in my head exactly how many eggs fit on an egg turner. I have two now in case I forget how many one will hold, but it didn't work. I only have 68 eggs in the incubators right now....where did I go wrong? There's at least 30-40 empty spots, right?

I can not wait for the day that I am putting my OWN eggs in the incubator. I just got my very own keeper cockerel a week ago. I decided the best starting place with my roo was to let a professional breeder grow me a perfect one. He's a pure breed/show quality Blue Ameraucana! I am so excited!! (oh, and my husband thinks the beautiful blue hen that came with him was a stowaway)

Thank you! Yes, just like that! =)

I KWYM. I haven't used a turner, but I always feel like I could have more eggs in there no matter what I put in in the first place, no matter what kind of math, logic, cut up egg cartons, etc. that I use.

Yay for the roo!!! Yay that your DH thinks the hen was a stowaway!!!

Can the day go any slower? I am hanging out to candle the eggs on day 10 (when I will also weigh them) and I just cant wait

Anyone else weigh their eggs? I was going to mark the air sacs but I find weighing easier, provided I can get the right equation. Can anyone tell me if I have this is correct for me to track the correct weight loss?

I don't weigh, but I hope your candling goes/went well!!!

We have ducklings hatching

Yay!

My little dun colored chick is going to make it. I can't remember if I posted on here too or just on the Mid TN thread. It had a difficult hatch because the incubator ran dry in the end when I was at work. It was so weak at first that the action of breathing made it rock back and forth like a drunk staggering around. I put it in with some 3 day old quail chicks hoping that it would take cues from them on eating and drinking. Finally when I added wet cat food to the ground chick starter it started eating. I hope it is a girl because I am getting attached.

So happy for you and the chick!

OMGosh! So funny! I was reading this when a Hot Pockets commercial came on and they were playing a tune I don't know the name of but recognize. They were singing, "Hot Pockets got protein to please, hey piñata got energy, My hot pockets"..... Maybe someone knows the tune from the commercial? It was so funny the tune with the dancing smilies. LOL

Awesome Idea!! The Partridge could be "PeanutButter" and one could be "Oreo"!! The yellow and black ones are Spangled English Orpingtons..

I need two more names....

Cookie
Chip
PeanutButter
Oreo
____

Oatmeal? No, that's a boring cookie, isn't it?
Snickerdoodle? Too long, huh?
Shortbread? IDK, I just like Highland Shortbread.

If you have a large one: Double Stuff
Also, Oatmeal, Raisin, Sprinkles, Icing, Caramel, Vanilla, Cinnamon, Brownie, Cupcake, etc. if you want to keep the dessert theme going.

It's a cute idea.

I like that dessert theme.

I'm naming all my Seramas fairy tale and Disney character names, but I match their names to their personalities and/or appearance, and it's hard to come up with exactly the right name for each one.

One is named Peter Pan because he likes to FLY! Bashful is very shy, Perdita (the mama dog in 101 Dalmations) is white with brown and black speckles, and so on and so on.

Speaking of dessert themed names, my kids named our first chickens (from darkest to lightest) Chocolate, Caramel, Cinnamon, and they were going to name one Nutmeg....and we have a pullet named Brownie b/c brownies are DH's favorite dessert and she was his favorite pullet (to look at).
Otherwise, we've used Star Trek: The Next Generation for names and NFL players. Oh, and they named the WL hens Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail, and Peter (yes, a girl named Peter), after Peter Rabbit and his sisters.

Can someone help me please? I am new to incubating eggs and just candled my first batch at 7 days, I've seen many candling photos on here and receiving mixed messages. Can someone tell me if my eggs are
good eggs or not please?

I would keep it in my incubator, but I'm not an expert, just an addict.

I HAVE BABIES!!!! First one to hatch was a Silver Seabright, 2nd was a Norwegian Jaerhorn, 3rd was a Golden Seabright and 4th was a Norwegian Jaerhorn. There are about 7 pipped eggs and lots more to go.

Congrats!!!
