Incubators Anonymous

I try to always give my 110%

I was half hoping someone would tell me that I just didn't make the grade so I had to try harder

Oh I forgot to mention that I made my 2 oldest chicks diapers to free up their brooder since my bedroom stays pretty warm. I'm not sure if that crosses line between addiction and insanity

It might, but insanity is just the addict that lives their addiction better than the rest of us.

I have a pip in one of my cream legbar eggs! It's in the middle of the egg, more towards the narrow end. I'm a little worried. It is peeping. I peeled just a tiny bit of egg to reveal the membrane and made a tiny snip near the beak. It's day 21, but I had a half day where the temp was a little low (92-94), so if they are ok, they will probably hatch late. I don't want to to rush help this one, but I am worried about it since it's not in the big end.

A local friend of mine has cream legbars from the same batch from the same breeder. She had 2-3 pip like this and they all died. :(

Yay for babies!!!!!

You're brilliant!!! I'm going to ask DH to go looking on CL for a wine cooler!!!!!

Thank you so much!!!

How do you turn a wine cooler into a chick/egg heater?

Just read that you're concerned about when to assist in a hatch. Sorry I didn't catch that before.
There's an article; search "assisted hatch" and you should find the article. Good information in there; it gives time frames on when to candle and when to hatch and how exactly to assist.

Why did I just order CCL eggs?

B/c you're an addict. =)

LOl...because you don't want a sad....empty....bator?????

Full bators are soooo much happier!!!!

Yeah, this!!!
@calichicken , Another Enabler Award!!!

Sigh... another temp spike last night. I don't think I will be keeping my LG's very long.

It holds temp and everything just fine when I'm awake. It waits to misbehave when I'm asleep. I keep my room at a fairly constant temp so I don't get it. I candled all my silkie eggs. All dead. 2 RIR chicks that I hatched for my grandmother made it. I candled the last 2 eggs and honestly wasn't sure if they were dead or not so I put them back in for another day or two. They looked like they possibly had survived.

I've actually used both and they both work. The first time was a disposable. Worked like a charm! Now I use the cloth.

Yes one must keep things even

I hope you have a better turnout than me!!!

I KWYM about them waiting to misbehave when you're sleeping. I know it's going to be cold, so I make sure they're going to be warm enough overnight and then when I get up in the morning, they're usually a little cool.

I only have small incubators (one holds up to 8 and the other I can fit 15 in, but I leave one hole empty for rotating), so I use cotton rags in three holes of an egg carton.

Thanks! I hope you have a good turn out on your questionable ones.

Oddly, the spikes are usually high temps at night. Occasionally it'll get down to 97 at night, which isn't all that surprising considering it's been in the teens outside at night. But I keep getting temp spikes to 106 in the middle of the night. There's no drafts or anything so I can't figure out what's making it do that. I did have a draft coming from one window but I fixed that when I figured it out. It doesn't do it during the day.

LOL I probably should've started out with one of the little ones that holds just a handful of eggs. I only wanted maybe 6 or so eggs at first but when someone hands you 26 eggs on your first try... it just sets the bar
roll.png
What kind are your small ones? I'm trying to decide what small one to get for my kids. I want one that isn't too spendy but will work well enough to give them a few chicks.

That's why I ended up with 2 LG's within a week of each other. Since I get them shipped and there's no way to synchronize their delivery dates, it just made sense to have a hatcher too. Otherwise I could only fit in one batch at a time and how sad would that be? And all the lovely variety I would miss out on! It's hard to find bantam barnyard mixes. Now my third incubator will be for all overflow eggs from generous sellers who send extras. And, um, you know... if I find a few more great deals while my first bator is full! And I just discovered that it can hold 71 large eggs or 89 small-medium eggs! I didn't realize it had that kind of capacity when I bought it.

I'd have to have mine under lock and key! And with absolutely no access to the key! Or bolt cutters for that matter...

Mine can hold 92 large eggs and 120 small

I have read in some threads about stacking eggs on the turner, can any one tell me how to do this. I like to put a couple of extra eggs in to make up for any clears but remembering to turn them for the 7 days can be tough.

I (will) have LF Lemon Blue Cochins...:) I have a flock of Cream Legbars for sale. ;) 4 hens & 1 cockerel. They just started to lay but have stopped since it got cold. :/ I'm asking $200 for all of them. They are wonderful birds, beautiful as well. I am just going in another direction.
