Incubators Anonymous

Quote:
I don't clean the incubator unless I have stinkers (rotten eggs) or if chicks hatch unexpectedly because I forgot the dates (more often than I care to admit!) the hatcher gets cleaned frequently just because of all the fuzz that chicks leave behind. that can clog fans and get on the heating elements.

I clean the hatcher after every hatch. I mix a solution of clorox and water and scrub down the bottom of the styrofoam hatcher...the wire floor, plastic water resevoirs and sponges.

I use a cloth that was rinsed in clorox and water and wipe down the upper part.

I use a blower and blow the dust out of the fan.

Hi,I have two pips out of 8 Golden Pheasant eggs as of this morning.I hope they make it out.I have never hatched Golden Pheasants before. My humidity is 68% but I am not sure what it should be! Does anyone Know what the humidity should be?

Marchick, I think myself that 68 is good. When I am incubating chiks and get down to the last three days I keep mine around 70 so if it's the same as your birds you should be fine. Mine usually come a day early so maybe I'm to high. You might be at a perfect setting.good luck!

sssharon, your temperature is probably a little high, which would cause them to hatch a little early.

68/70 humidity Is Good!!

This is day 23 for the golden pheasants.I was told they took 22 to 23 days. I started out with 9 eggs. One candled clear which made 8 but one other egg was in question! Well so far 5 out of 8 have hatched. But one baby has a bad leg that bends behind him and he can't stand! Is there something I can do for him? He just flops around in the bator. The other three eggs have a pip in the shell and zipped about 1/2 in but no progress from last night till this morning. The one chick is still alive but I can't tell on the other two. What should I do?

A very sad day! Two of the pheasants where born with a leg that went behind them! I am sure it was from ruff shipping. Two of the eggs had a very big dip in the air cell.I taped the legs to help them. When I was putting the second baby back he jumped out of my hands and hit the floor. I killed that poor baby trying to help it! I went from my first 100% hatch to this!

Shipping an egg typically does not cause leg issues. Slippery surfaces in the incubator during hatching, and delayed incubation leading to chicks that are weak and struggle a long time to hatch may cause leg issues.

The big dip in the air cell often has no effect on the growing chick.

I was there when they both hatchd. They where that way right out of the egg. The first chick with leg problem was the 4th chick hatched. He piped yesterday morning and hatched that evening. The lady I bought the eggs from told me they would hatch between 22 and 23 days. They hatched on day 22 and day 23. I thought maybe in the egg they where not positioned right and they formed that way due to the large dip in the air cell! I don't know!

I think I need to buy more eggs of some kind to help me get over my loss! Maybe some more blue black splash ameracuana eggs. One died! One dozen eggs should make me feel better or two! True addict!!!
