I also have good news to report - 3 German New Hampshires out and 3 more pips! They waited until almost exactly 21 days to the hour to really get going, but those three all hatched within about two hours of each other. I am so relieved! I have been so looking forward to these chicks!

My Euskal Oiloa/Basque Hens are three weeks old and moved outside yesterday with an EcoGlow. I was really nervous about it, but they are doing great and seem to be thrilled to be outside!
All is well!

okay fingers crosses. I went to feed the chickens and the rest of the farm animals and decided to check on the eggs and I finally have 2 pippin. So far only the 2 from the 25 or so I i have in there. I am going to go out there here in a little bit and see how they are doing. I am sooo releived I really honestly thought I had done something wrong. It may be the only 2 that pip but hey I will take it. Keep you all posted.

Congrats on your sweeties hatching. I am going to have to look this breed up sense I have never heard of it before.

I am at it again.....I couldn't help myself and ordered eggs from two different people....sigh.. I was so worried to tell my husband because he really isn't a chicken lover like I am. He likes the little chicks but he wouldn't have chickens if it weren't for me liking them so. I have 11 little ones just getting feathers in a brooder that are 2 weeks old. Four in another brooder that are 4 weeks old. And some in the little chicken house that are 7 weeks old. So far I can tell I have 5 roos in the older ones. The little ones I am not sure yet. I also have 30 odd chickens in the big chicken house...... So DH was asking me all about the little ones I have and as we were talking he asked if I was going to hatch more...I have to say I did wake in the night an wondered how I was going to tell him....so here it was. I told him yes I had two batches of eggs coming and he just asked how many. Not upset about it a bit. Why did I worry. LOL I guess I am winning him over to the dark side.

My son is the one that said Oh, Mom! in a way that I knew he didn't think I should but he really gets into it when they start hatching too.

I guess they should have known I was going to be like this because I spent my mad money on a new genesis after we had already built a home made bator that was working just fine.
So now since the eggs are coming a week a part I will have both of them going at the same time for two weeks......What am I going to do with all those chickens and then all those eggs that come from those chickens??????? I have only one customer and she has always bought all my eggs. She has hot springs pool and they have campers and people coming to swim so she can sell them but I don't think she wants more than the 10 doz a week that she takes now.

I am going to have to go door to door in town.

Once our hatching skills are pumping out the chicks, it is time to add to your skill base. 10 dozen a week to one customer is great!!! Add to your sales via craig's list to sell hatching eggs ( charge more) and eating eggs. Sell the chicks when they are cute and fuzzy thru CL and BYC. ANd you can still go door to door in town.

You will find customers in the most unlikely places.

I know I am lucky to have that customer. She loves my eggs. I hate to sell my babies.

I can't be sure they go to a good home. I know that is crazy. Just like I don't want to cull any of the hens. I have some that are 5 years old and my son is wanting to can them. LOL He has been wanting to use the pressure cooker for a while now. He is a grown man so this isn't a bad thing. But I am not wanting to give up my ladies. Part of it is so many of them look a like I can't tell who is 5 and who is just 1 1/2. Some are easy because I haven't gotten any more of that kind but the EE's are not easy.

I have birds that are NOT for sale. My special girls. So, I understand your attachment. However, there are people who will take good care of them just like you do. Look at all the wonderful caretakers you find here on BYC. Many of my customers that I have sold hatching eggs to, this isn't even the chicks, keep in touch with me and let me know how the chicks are doing. When you are overrun with chickens, then you will feel ready to hatch and SELL. When you see the delight of little children picking out their special chick. . . you know that chick will have a loving home. Until you are ready, enjoy your birds, I love watching mine everyday.

I know I have to get there some day. Once I do it I will get over this fear of letting go. LOL It is really harder for me than letting go of my kids. I know that my kids were going to be able to take care of themselves. These little ones are dependent on people to care for them. The older I get the worse I get because I have seen more I guess. I am working on it. LOL

I have sold horses, babies that I bred and raised for sale. I screen the buyers. Some have had a wonderful life. Some had a short life when a vet misdiagnosed. OThers become lawn ornaments. Others cart young teens around a hunter course. Others cart around the 50+ group. Overall they have all had a decent to good life in the care of another person. I still feel the way you do; I just try to balance it with knowing there are truly nice people who take care of their pets and animals. I may be older than you think. I bought my first horse the year I married, and he is 25 tomorrow.
