Sorry the PEN was the Pen the birds are in. I mark the eggs with pencil. The marans eggs I mark with an artist pencil that is white. The vet wrap can stay on for a long time.... months. After they get to be about 3 months, I use velcro and use pipe cleaners for the color markers. I can't put up a pic right now, if I can remember I will later.

The vet wrap goes around the leg? The pipe cleaners on top of the wrap if you need another color? Wow! I'm going to try that. Thanks!

When theya re all out and running around, will you know which is which? I use dividers when I need to be sure of each egg.
i have an old style and don't think i can use them, but great idea!!

My daughter saw her very first chick hatch last night!!
And it's so cool she knew what it was. She kept saying "chickie?" over and over

And I have a question.. it's been 8 hours and the chick is still wet. What do I do?

i would say he's probably dry by now, but maybe just some dried on goo... do you have any other chicks you can put him with?

i tend to keep mixed age chicks together, as long as the youngest of the older chicks is no more than a week old. that gives the new babies someone to huddle with. i won't mix any more than 3 weeks apart in age tho. otherwise the oldest are ready to leave the brooder and the youngest aren't quite ready...

my current mix ranges from 4 weeks -2 ??s from TSC i had hoped were cochins, 2 weeks - 1 mille fleur cochin & 5 dorkings, and 1 week - 7 more dorkings. one of the latest babies was shrink wrapped, and entirely gooey when he got out. within 2 days you couldn't tell. the other chicks preened the goo off and he is nicely fluffy now.

This chick is a BLRW.
I have some 3 week old Silkies in the barn.. and a calico Cochin hatched last night. The new chick is dryer then the 1st already, I think you're right, it's goo.

I have a chick from the smashed shipment! That is the one that had egg goo all over the eggs. After last weeks hatch that was so sticky, this one did very well. I am on the edge of day 21 but have no pips in the other eggs. I still have hope tough
