Earlier I was feeling over loaded with chicks and then I sold * roosters and felt so much better. Well with 15 turkey eggs going into lockdown, I think I'm starting to feel panicky again! Where to put all these chicks? ANd they grow so fast.

half will be roos, toms.... they have to go.... then it is manageable.

Then you can hatch more right?

Warning.... dumb question ahead....... What's a "split"? I should know this by now, but I've not got it all figured! Ha.. thanks.

split is hwn it is heterozygous, carries one gene not both. I have a black split for lav. He looks black and carries 1 lav gene.

Turkey poults are for sale. I have 3 hens with a tom and they should last a few years.

They carry 1/2 of the genes needed for what ever to express.... in my case it is Lavender. They carry one copy of the Lavender gene and will pass it to 1/2 the offspring. I have only ever seen it used with Lavenders.... not sure why. I would think anything that is recessive and needs two copies to express could be a split for what ever......

always grateful for answers! Thanks all.

TWO shipments due this week. Cuckoo Marans from Mr HEinz, and 8 BR turkey eggs from marie ( emvickrey).

i had pretty good hatch from mr heinz's eggs... even considering it was a wet hatch and i lost a few. but they ALL went to lockdown, and egg-topsied after. all were fully developed and internally pipped, just too wet and they didn't make it... he sent me a mix, cuckoo marans, welsummer, olive eggers, ameraucana and guinea... i had 5 guineas hatched, 2 cuckoo marans, 2 olive eggers, 1 welsummer and 2 ameraucanas hatched. sadly, i lost my blue ameraucana chick at a week old. the olive eggers, guineas and cuckoo marans were sold as day old chicks,

i've still got the welsummer and a black ameraucana and a black copper marans from another set of eggs. they went out to the baby pen 2 days ago with the barred rocks and oegb that my broody momma had, 3 sg dorkings and 2 mille fleur cochins.

i took the chicks away from the broody because i needed to move the pen they were in, and put someone else in it. so now she's back with my oegb roo (he's much happier not getting molested by the red dorking guy in the bachelor pen LOL) and all her chicks have figured out life 'without momma' in their own pen with other chicks of similar age. LOL
