ok, glad you're making it work. not many can.I am very aware of what they are. And I have 6 birds that are over 16 weeks already. They are actually 17 weeks and a few days old. There are several people out there that have kept cx for 1 year plus. And yes you can get them to lay and you can hatch out chicks from them. I know they won't be the same and that's good because I don't want the same thing. I am working towards the same type of thing Tim shell did 10 years ago before he moved to china. It took him about 6 generations to get to a bird that grew out to butcher size in 12 weeks but would also lay well and not get too fat if kept feed restricted. His also bred true.
You ain't a kiddin!!! My last 2 batches went from NO chicks to like 10 in 15 minutes...LOLremember the quail eggs i set but couldn't remember the date? well, now i know. LOL
i've been candling them daily waiting to see signs of internal pip or drawdown... well last night they all looked the same, but one air cell was a bit larger than the rest. so to be safe, i put them in the hatcher with the EE eggs i set. checked them this morning and didn't see any change from last night. walked by the hatcher just now to get lunch, and i noticed movement. so i look? 3 gold 5 brown out of 8 fertile eggs.

man those little buggers hatch fast.
Keep us posted, I kept a few freedom ranger hens last fall, I only have 1 left out of five, all 4 had problems with prolapse, but then again they were 12 weeks before I decided to keep them and switch the food...The one I have left lays every 2 days, she is about 16 months old and still gets around good for a meatie.People who have gotten these to lay have reported that they don't lay very many eggs, but that is to be expected. I don't need very many chicks to hatch out of these. I would like a dozen out of each pullet but would be happy if I can get 3 each before they croak. That would give me enough to work with for the next stage, which would be breeding back the cockerels to cx pullets. Then I would use that generation and line breed from there. I think this is how shell did it. At one time I saw something on exactly how he did it but can't seem to find it now. This way would make sense. He says his were 75% cx and 25% Delaware. No matter what happens it will be a fun project. I am hoping to be able maintain my own flock and raise the broilers for my customers instead of buying chicks like I do now. Time will tell I guess.
GAH! i'll pass on the 3 on the tree... give me a 5 speed (jeep) any day. not that i have the incubator anyways. LOLI saw this today I WANT ONE!! http://www.brinsea.com/prod-Ova_Easy_380_Advance_Cabinet_Incubator-227.aspx will trade a 1970 chevy 1/2 ton c10 with a straight six three on the tree![]()
