personally, i don't. never have never will. the only thing i remove is the top and flap if it's a 12-pack carton (grocery store type) but i usually just use the 30-count egg flats.
The Hovabator Genesis is a good way to go. You can get one without the turner if you are on a tight budget. I have four of them and have very good hatches. Try ebay or incubatorwarehouse.com.
I second the vote for a silkie hen, look at the one we call Mama PJ,Buy a Silkie hen... or two
I do not know of any other incubator that works well, is really cheep (just feed them) and takes such good care of the babies.
Most cheap incubators do not run well unless you can provide optimum conditions. ANY fluctuations in the external temperatures or humidity will mess them all up. See my signature for proof...
They unfortunately don't carry them "yet". I've been looking online but shipping is OUTRAGEOUS!! I want a "real" incubator darn it! LOL
Thank you! I was just looking at a Hovabator (still air) on incubatorwarehouse.com, but the shipping was about pretty high up there (I hate to shop online, i'd rather go get stuff myself and not pay the store to send it LOL!) But I guess I may have to break down and get one shipped LOL!!!
I guess I may have to do that instead, but can I incubate pheasant eggs under a broody hen or are they more likely to be broken from being smaller in size? This was a hatch of ten eggs, some hers and some from other hens. These are now pullets and some, the silkies, have been given away.
This is her when she took over being mama to 36 chicks I had brought home. This was all of them only there were so many she couldn't cover all of them. I had a heat lamp in the brooder area for those that couldn't get under her. All of the chicks turned out to be cockerels. She is sitting again on some of her eggs and some from other hens we have.
I've definitely noticed the temp fluctuations from outside temps changing (my bator is in my bedroom and I can't use my heat for longer than 30 mins or the temp in the bator starts to rise). Thats what is great about the Genesis. It adjusts the temp on its own. Mine hold temp just fine. I personally think a bator is the better way to go. Even with a Silkie they still have to go broody, you can't just give them eggs any day of the week though they do go broody more often than most breeds you'll still be on their schedule, not yours.
