Incubators Anonymous

Oh, and my 2nd question would be: How dan you tell the difference between a Dominique and a Barred Rock? My neighbor tells me she thinks mine are Barred Rock, but the man who sold them to me said they were doms. I will post a photo of mine. Can anyone tell me which they are?

Domiques have white legs and there may be other traits but I'll leave that to the experts :) .

Tonight I changed my strategy. The last two hatches were set in the morning and I ended up staying up the entire night at hatch time because they hatched between 11 pm and 5 am! Both times!.... so this time, I set them at 7:30 pm so maybe they will hatch during the day! So, now to wait my 21 days!

X2 about the combs. You have barred rocks. Doms have rose combs. Also, barred rocks have even black/white pattern. Doms have wider white than black. You can google, "Difference between Barred Rocks and Domineckers." There is a good site that shows photos. I, too, was told I had Dominique, but really have a BR.

There are sooo many different ways to incubate. I think the only way to figure out the "best" way is just to do it. If you don't like your results, change your methods.

Personally, I keep it at about 25% until lockdown. I also mark the air cells and weigh the eggs before I set, day 7, 14 & at lockdown to make sure they're progressing as they should. I put the humidity to 50% at lockdown until first pip, then I push it up to 70%. That's what seems to work best for me. I hatch upright, not on their sides.
it's true each incubator is going to have it's quirks. as well as location, room, local conditions, etc. all play into what needs to be done. what works for one person may not for another...

for ME, dry incubation (not adding ANY water during the first 18 days) works best, then increasing it to 50-60 the last 3 days... and my eggs tend to hatch late on day 20 going into day 21. very rarely do i have late hatches, and when we do, they're usually not thrifty.

The difference between the two is the comb. Those are barred rocks the dominique have a rose comb. Here is a picture.

I just put my FIRST batch ever of Silver Penciled Wyandotte bantams in..... SUPER excited. 2 look like they quite early but I put them in just in case but the other 7 were already trying to pip internally

The other eggs looked really good too. Spring has sprung at my place..... now I need that new brooder box so I can put the chicks that are for sale in..... NO MORE people looking at MY chicks and talking me into selling them
