I have had "clears" show up in shipped eggs when USPS handled a package too roughly. The ones that survived the miss-handling were either lucky or very strong embryos. I also second the heat/cold although it usually is a "shock" temperature as well as excessive (like too sudden of a change). Those ones sometimes show it by micro-fracturing and weeping though.

I bought two dozen Orpington eggs to hatch and when I candled there are 16 clear and 8 developing. They have been in the incubator long enough that the clears are definitely clear. What I don't know is if they are infertile or something happened to the eggs before they could begin to develop. The breeder has had high fertility so I wonder if something went wrong. If I had done something to kill the eggs before they began to develop, would it be possible to have one third developing while two thirds did not develop? I don't know of anything that would have killed some eggs and not all of them. I am not new at hatching so I can't think of what I could have done different with this batch.
I ship a lot of eggs-- from the same pen customers can have very different outcomes.

You didn't mention if the eggs had been shipped???? If you only knew what the usps can do to eggs-- it is a miracle we get so many to hatch. But we do!!

Well my last hatch of the season is done. Only a 10% -15% hatch rate so I am giving up. They were shipped eggs so I know that makes a difference. On the upside my flock is bigger by 2 EE, 1 partridge pendesenca, and 1 Blue copper maran. I know they are all pullets cause I don't allow roos.

Kinda sad! Out of 17 eggs into lockdown...only 6 made it! :( NO idea what happened! Did "eggtopsies" and the chickies seemed formed, not malpositioned or anything! No temp/humidity spikes or lows! Shipped Polish and sizzle/silkie eggs. :( Oh well, I DID get 4 Polish and 2 Silkies that I didnt' have before!! :) Pretty lil chickies!

Sorry--I"m having that kind of year myself, and mine aren't shipped. I put eggs under the broodies to improve my odds and 3 hatched today!! WHoot. I REALLY want to candle the remaining eggs to see if more will be arriving. Guess I'll know by tomorrow!!!

Oh, and I noticed the broodie duck off her nest, left to the other broody hen. SHe had moved into another nest to help with the new babies!!!!!

We have a friend who works at the post office. He said he has seen workers deliberately shake the boxes that say "fragile, hatching eggs" or whatever. He told us they laugh about it! It is sad that people don't respect others feelings for their valuables no matter if they are eggs or other breakables!
