I don't do anything different if the bator has only 1 or is full. the fan keeps the temp even. heat sinks only benefit, IMO if you have a thermostat that isn't very stable, or if you lose power frequently... with power loss, the heat the other items have absorbed helps keep everything more even.

Yay... the hatch begins .. three out and 36 to go ..

don't know if I said, but the last hatch was 21 fertile, got 18 out. the others quit prior to pip.

an assortment of sfh, bantam blrw (possibly a couple mixes), bantam cochins and a few cochin/blrw crosses too.

Possibly my worst hatch yet..... just put 3 eggs into lock-down. Only saw movement in one but development looked about right in other 2 so keeping everything crossed!
The eggs came out of a rack, pointy end down, to be laid on their sides. How do you determine which way round they should be? Does it matter? I just want to give these 3 the best chance possible!

let the egg decide - place it on a flat surface and see how it settles - thats they way to lay it in the bator.

So far my staggerd hatching is going great! I've hatched 7 ducklings and put 3 more on lock down after cleaning out the gunk from the hatching. So much easier with 2 incubators. I think I am hoing to have to buy some duck eggs from some one else so I can do this again next year. I'm talking to a friend about trading some of my ducklings for her's when they're old enough.

The cooler air has arrived reminding me fall is coming fast-- geez what was I thinking. At least her sister is still laying my breakfast.

Next week? My staggered hatch will be going through the end of the month. But you do have a point, I defiantly need to find a year round egg vender. Maybe next time I'll try those chickens with the purple eggs. Does anyone know what they're called
