Incubators Anonymous

What a busy day! I have 9 flufferbutts in the bator, 3 gold laced and 4 buff laced brahmas, and 2 wheaten Americans. Thinking I will have two more before bed, one is for sure starting to zip now.

Finished my hatch for 5-9 and ended with a neat looking bunch of chicks. Not all meat birds that I had thought. A couple oddballs snuck in somehow but no complaints End count 14 eggs set, 1 clear pulled at D10 10 live chicks, 1 external pip but quit and 2 failed to pip. 1 bird is 3/4 BA-1/4 WLH he's real smoky colored. And 1 was ??? X SLC / WLH (I think). Meat birds look all different, but they all have some type of black in the gene pool. So I have a colorful brooder right now.
Ducks started hatching way early, but I think that's from real high end temp in bator. They may not make it. I moved to hatcher ASAP but don't think I am going to count on ducklings for awhile. Those I set on 5-4 are developing, might have 1 clear and 2 rings but waiting a few days for sure. With other eggs doing so great I am not completely devastated on the ducks, but would like them to hatch. I moved some ducks from 1 incubator to another so If needed I can use 1 shelf in the home-made bator for hatching the chickens due on the 13th. Ba and BYM there. Could be anything in these but a good mix I think.

Set Serama eggs, Ringneck Pheasant eggs, Barred Rock Bantams eggs, and Black/Blue Cochin eggs in the incubator 5/8/14. Fingers crossed for a good hatch on 5/29/14.

Double stack them

LOL I do. My Home made incubator has 2 shelves currently that each hold 70-80 eggs. I could add more shelves But shuffling 2 drawers, just the top 1 really, is annoying as it is. Wish girls would get above where they are on production, I know we all do, but would absolutely love to fill bator with 1 weeks breeding pen set. Only filled bottom drawer this week. Top was full of BA, BYM and duck eggs so it worked out this time. Wouldn't mind being able to do a serious egg culling for breed pens but at the moment I need the eggs cooking. I don't set any poor eggs just would like a little more ability to cull less than perfect eggs. But the I would probably have 0% fertility and hatch.

if I can fill my bator with a week's supply of eggs, I am going to be in serious trouble.

there are 200 in there now and I could fit another 400

Someone on another forum mentioned they ran out of incubator space, so they tried their dehydrator for hatching eggs and it worked.

I've got a dehydrator.

I use one as a heating element. I think they get too hot. You would have to hook them up to a thermostat somehow to make that work.
