Incubators Anonymous

Lol I just order 20 new chicks, and have 2 different egg shipments on their way, and I just finished building a cabinet bator that holds 120 eggs!!!

At this rate you will fill that up in no time!

The morning of day 22 and my eggs are hatching! One is out and another 4 have pipped. 2 more haven't pipped yet, as far as i can tell, but i think they will - they were all moving at last candling day 18 and I've seen them wobbling since lock down.

Say hello to my first first baby chick! Not bad considering my incubator is just a light bulb sellotaped in a cupboard! And I've done so many things wrong, I've been so surprised I've not killed them all! I started out with 10 eggs, 3 of them weren't developing early on and i was left with 7. Now lets see if all 7 hatch out, fingers crossed!

I always had a lower hatch rate with my Lav Orps and i have heard this from other sources..
I don't have any laying right now, I sold the layers and just kept some chicks and a roo, but
let me know in a few months if you want to try agin and
I will help you out if i can.

I still have a Lav Orp Roo (a different one than i was using before) but i am planning to look
for a really nice typey black roo and make some splits.. :)

:ya congrats!

So accomplice #2 (2nd broody hen) failed me and will be dismissed. Today is hatch day for her silkie eggs she's been sitting on. This morning when I went out to check on her, one had hatched but she killed it. She must have repeatedly pecked its poor little head and she left it sitting out in the cold. When I got out there it was ice cold and made one feeble chirp, then passed.

NOT the way I wanted to start out today, my heart just broke, the poor little thing.

So I quick rushed the rest of the eggs (just two were starting to pip) into the house and quick stuffed them in the hatcher that's on day 19 lockdown, the humidity jumped right back up instantly but I still worry. Another long long day at work.

How heartbreaking, so sorry! Hope the rest of the hatch goes ok!

I heard quite a bit of chirping before I left and the one egg had just started zipping, so I really hope I got them in there just in time. My humidity was at 70% so I hope they will be moist enough....just not too moist.

I now know who isn't allowed to go broody again. She's a cochin so I really didn't consider the fact that she wouldn't be a good mother since they are close to the top for best brooders. Once again, I've got a lesson that every hen is an individual.

Edit - cant communicate this morning
