Incubators Anonymous

Here are some pictures of my new chicks. I have to say my Hova-Bator worked great for me. It definitely is work adjusting heat and humidity but it worked great! I didn't know if I would get any chicks because the eggs I put in the bator were dirty somewhat. I had cleaned them a little but had concerns about it. I ended up with 10 chicks out of 12 so I would say I worried for nothing.

They would not cooperate and look at the camera. LOL

Barred Rock mix and White Leghorn or Ameraucana.

I would say these two are a mix of Barred Rock and White Leghorns or Ameraucanas.

Can u guys tell me the types of incubators u use? I'm looking at getting a Janoel8-48 automatic incubator anybody try this one yet? And what do u mean by dry incubate until 18th day?
I had a poor hatch ratell on my last 3 incubation with a the little green still air incubator and I put a small fan in there but I'm getting sticky chicks
I'm hoping to prevent this for my future hatchlings

Can't tell you much about the incubator, but a dry hatch means adding only a little water during incubation.
There's a good link about incubating here:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-101

It covers the basics & many details.
I've used the Styrofoam incubators often. Because the ones I borrowed were constantly on loan to teachers all over the county, my hatches could vary. Bacteria can hide within the Styrofoam, the hygrometers & thermometers could need calibration, etc. If you used shipped eggs..... that's a whole different can of worms. You may do everything right & get 80% or 0%.

I could not afford a Brinsea, so I made an incubator out of a cooler. I personally liked the challenge & it was a fun project.

I couldn't afford an expensive bator either. Now I have two homemade ones. A cooler one I made first but now use mainly as a hatcher and a cabinet one. I might build a bigger cabinet bator later on. Both of mine are manually turn but that isn't so bad most of the time.

JD4570 My Hova-Bator works great. I set 12 eggs and ended up with 10. All are healthy and happy as you can see by the pictures. I have had 3 hatches with my bator and the last was very good.

Hey everyone! Did anyone see the pics I posted of what my Hova-Bator produced for me. I feel like I'm being skipped. I would think someone would comment on how cute the chicks were or be amazed that any incubator puts out 80 percent of the eggs that were set. I think the big thing is the eggs just from what I have seen out of 3 hatches. A lot of my eggs had to be discarded for various reasons. I would have had 11 out of 12 if I had waited a little longer. I thought because I had saved one chick who couldn't get out because of a dried membrane that I could do it with another. It had pipped but wasn't going anywhere and when I got it out it was premature so I learned from that mistake. I was lucky because the one was ready and is thriving. Anyway, I thought you would all be surprised at what a good turnout that was but not one comment. Obviously I'm on the wrong thread. I watched several comments on incubators and not one comment other then bad on the hovabator. Thanks for all the interest.

Also, I didn't just join. I've been on BYC for 7 months and due to a mistake got put on as a new egg. That message is for everyone also just in case you were thinking I don't know anything about chickens. Thanks
