Incubators Anonymous

The biggest and best growing I keep as breeders the rest I eat. All I have right now are coturnix. I have several color variations. Id like to have more im still working on my quail kingdom lol. I'd love to have some buttons there definitely the next breed that im going to get only problem is that ABSOLUTELY NO ONE around me raise any. Wife says that im getting a little carried away with it all but then she dont complain when I sell a 50, 75, or 100 at a time.

I've been contempating hatching quail. When you do sell them, what type of customers do you sell to - hunting ranches, the general public or ?

I usually sell to the gen public. We have several swap meet/trade day's close to were I live so its not to hard to sell off my extras. Game ranches want flight conditioned Bob whites which take special pens that cost lots of $$$$$ I dont think my wife would let me spend that much on pens right now. I get 3 dollars a peace for my coturnix. I know that dont sound like much but most people buy 10-12 at a time. Make 5-6 sales like that every trade day and it really adds up. Plusses cot's are extremely productive. Eggs incubate at 16 days they start laying at 5-6 weeks and can be dressed out at that age also. Also they can be raised in a small space which makes then ideal if you have a limited amout of room.

Are you going to candle again before lockdown?

Yes at fifteen days I usually only candle twice but since some were my pullet eggs I was very curious.

lol maybe it's just me, but i can't do nothing that long... i candle about every 2-3 days LOL took 1 more dorking egg out today but that one was ?? when i candled the other day so i wasn't surprised. the blood vessels were still there but looked faded, and there was no movement. the rest are moving good today.

I usually try to candle only twice because it stresses out the eggs each time you take them out of the incubator. I have had a few bad hatches for shipped eggs and I am actually setting some of my first full size pullet eggs so it make me a bit anxious. Unless it's obviously dead I don't ever take anything out until day 15 though. By that time I will know for sure if it's not developed because a 15 day old egg looks very developed.

I wish my incubator had a dozen . . . . I'm still trying to keep to my good intentions of waiting til spring. So pardon me for lurking and sighing . . . . that wishful sigh . . . .
