ok a repost for some who may not have read this entire thread, or somehow just missed it...

pete55 has a series of threads/articles he's written that are a MUST in my opinion, for anyone seriously interested in incubating and hatching eggs.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/595007/incubation-and-hatching-guide

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/632744/guide-to-humidity-and-weighing-in-incubation

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...t-of-damaged-and-mal-positioned-egg-air-cells

the titles for each are pretty self-explanatory. i re-familiarize myself with each one now and then, to remind myself of things i may have forgotten...

his incubation guide is also in the april/may edition of backyard poultry magazine as well, if you prefer a hard copy to go back to.

and if you're reading this pete, thanks again. you'll never know how much help you've been.

ok anyone have a suggestion how to cure an egg stealing dog? he snagged one of the eggs from my broody when she went to eat today. it was due to hatch tomorrow but i ended up having to put it down because there was too little shell left and the yolk was damaged.

and killing the dog isn't an option. he means more to me than the chickens but it's still a bad habit.

ok well that's one suggestion but i have coops and stuff all over the place, with free ranging chickens and dogs... i don't think that's really a practical one for me.

if i could find something to put IN or ON an egg to make it taste disagreeable that might work better to break the habit... it's a recent one, as of about 3 days ago. and i can't catch him in the act of actually stealing the eggs, only when he's sitting there with the egg in his mouth. so far he hasn't broken any eggs except the hatching one.

i wouldn't mind if he would bring me the eggs he finds out in the woods/yard. guess i'm just going to have to put a door on the coops he can't get into

If you know someone with a shock collar you could borrow it and have them tell you how to use it. I know it sounds hard on the dog but they have different settings. for some dogs the lowest setting will work and the is really just a vibrating. You will have to be very watchful of him and hit it when he gets to a nest. It wont take long until he wont even look at the nests or probably the chickens either. It is such a hard habit to cure without something that makes him think they are bad. Micki

thanks. i did have one for shadow but that was 11 years ago and it's been lost since... that might be the trick. he's got some other things we need to work with and the collar is a good immediate response. yeah it can be a cruel training tool if not used properly, but that's the key to any training method. it must be used properly. think i know someone who has one i might borrow too.

I know some people may not like the idea and think it is cruel. I have never even thought of it because my dogs have always been easy to train except this last one I got who thinks he is the ruler of all things. LOL I had to use a pinch collar on him at first. I had never used them either. But he got so used to having to wear it to go walk that he just came over and put his head right in it grinning at me. LOL He still has a few problems we are working on but he has gotten to work really well with my son. Not as good for me yet. He is a year and a half so I expect to get him over that too.

If I had used a pinch collar on my last dog he would have just shut down. It is amazing how different things work for different dogs. Well, maybe not amazing but it is interesting.....
