I will look and see if I have any.... if not I have crackers! We would use them in the restaurant in the sugar. They are stale so I will not miss them LOL

I will get some rice too. I like that idea best.

You know even though I have lost a few chicks and had the one baby I had to hand water and feed for a week befor she died I really had forgotton how bad bad can get when it comes to careing for animals. I came home today from helping at the church the quail had been put in there brooder about 3 or 4 hours befor I came home that time and got everyone out. I notices a big blob of blood on the bedding then was looking around at every one and saw a quail with blood on her leggs . I knew there was a fair amount of blood but I didnt really think I just turned her over to look at her legs and wow .. sher belly vent area and leggs were coverd in blood I honestly coudnt tell if there was just clots of blood on the feathers or if she was gutted she had stuff hanging out , my son ran and got some tolet paper and I wrapped her up snuggley so she coudnt move I coudnt put pressure directly on it cuase of her fighting and where it was. I almost threw up. her face and beak was all bloody. As far as I could tell she was the only one with blood on her beak and face. That has to mean she did whatever to herself right? I asked on here what to do but of course no one answerd I get about 15% responses to my many many post no idea why. My brother in law was comeing over to pick up the big chicks they were to big to keep in doors exscusivelly any more and he had a chicken tractor and a pen for them inside so he took them. I had him look at her I told her iif it was just a flesh wound I would keep her he just looked at me and said let me take care of it . I know that means it must have been bad so he took her to cull her he didnt do it here becuase I didnt want my son to see. I feel really horrible. I had forgtton all the horrible things that can go wrong when you have animals. Anyone have any ideas what may have happend and why it seems she did it to her self? Or does her beak being bloody even mean that or was she just trying to clean her self up?

Sounds like her umbillical was protruding & maybe got caught on something & she tried to fix it or picked at it out of pain & made it worse.

Would 4 week olds still have that? Sorry I forgot to say she was 4 or so weeks old. I really should have written everything down this time my sometimers is getting so bad Im lucky if I know what day of the week it is some days.

Hmmm...not at 4 weeks. She may have had a problem with her vent or gotten scratched by someone else, or coccidiosis may have caused the bleeding. I would watch the other chicks closely for similar symptoms.

Ok thank you I will watch everyone closley . I watch them fairly closesly anyways but Ill keep a better look out. She was always smallest and skinny and everyone kind of bullied her anyways but not that bad or at least I thought.

well, so far so good... apparently good rooster-mates of broodies accept babies too. 8) tho he's being more 'momma' than the mommas at the moment. they're still in 'sit on the nest' mode. i lost 2 of my self blues from being sat on too tight i think, so i removed the milk crate (both girls were crammed in) and made the nest right on the floor so there's more room now.

i did relocate the water and scattered some food on the floor. the oldest chicks were looking weak until i gave them a drink and they started eating (with "poppa's" encouragement)
