Incubators Anonymous

ok, well we've had a bit of excitement for tonight... went out to put up the 'delinquents'. my gold neck d'uccle pair WILL NOT go to bed in the coop but prefer to hang out on top of the mille cochin pen. EVERY NIGHT! well, tonight hubby shined his little flashlight that general direction and were were met with about 4 pairs of eyes WAY too far apart to be chickens. i went back in for the big flashlight, he went in for the .22

tally for the night:
humans: 1 momma and 4 baby raccoons
raccoons: terminal lead poisoning and 0 chickens.

2 of the babies were in my baby pen (chicks who just started free ranging). cute picture but it'll give me nightmares. both babies were on the roost with my barred rock and 2 oegb pullets, trying to figure out how to get out. we gave them the 'way out'... momma was on top of the big pen trying to make a hole, the other 2 babies were in the horse trailer (coop) with my big birds.

*attention raccoon lovers* don't whine to me. they're in my coop and don't belong there, they're dead. end of story.

all i can say is thank god the dogs are good at alerting me of problems. i don't shut the coops until i'm ready for bed, and both of them were trying to go into the baby coop after the coons... LOTS of obedience training comes to play when you've got 'easy prey' and a gun aimed at the prey, and you tell the dogs 'here! down! stay!" and they do.

You go! I think Speckledhen has something to the effect of a dog on your property is a pet on mine it is a predator....... They would have been back if you hadn't taken care of them. I personally would not want to tangle with a Mama raccoon .... that could get bad.

I have a problem..... I think I already have 90 eggs ready to go in the bator and 3+ dz in the mail or soon to be..... I quit hatching

BUT I really need these eggs. The Marans, I think I lost the batch in the bator, same with the Wheaten Ams, The cuckoos.... they are going soon so I NEED to hatch some. Then there are the eggs from the Blue Rocks and the GSBR roo I think they are fertile and I need to that project underway and the Exchequers I need to test them too.... what is a girl to do?

I will update on humidity tomorrow after we move the bator today.

Hatch hatch hatch! You need one of my leahys. Holds 600 chicken eggs and is redwood double walled. I love these things!

Mine hold 540 eggs and that is MORE than enough! LOL I have never filled it and never will, unless I have orders.
believe it or not I filled mine this year and had to overflow into the other. I am overrun with guineas right now. thankfully selling some this weekend along with some just hatched chicks.

ok... here's a (possibly) odd request. would everyone who sells hatching eggs PM me with a list of what they have and what they charge?

i'm offering incubation services to support my 'habit' and have a bunch of people asking for assortments. so far i've got an assortment from Beth (BHep) cooking along and a very happy momma-to-be. but i want to compile a list of what other people have so when someone wants "a few of this and couple of that" i will know who i can PM for availability.

Well I don't have much just some barred rocks that I sell for $6 a dozen plus shipping and 3rd gen del x hamps that I would sell for $4.50 a dozen. Done have much...yet. I have a lot of young ones right now that will be laying this fall.

I can do the following
silver laced wyondette
leghorn
easter egger
These are my rooster that have same breed hens, but since my flock all runs together I would need time to seperate them to get pure, I charge $5 a dozen when someone wants specific breeds only because of the seperation, but if they want mixes of these I only charge $3...The order I have them in is their pecking order in the flock.
In the future I hope to offer
blue cochin bantam
buff laced wyondette bantam
silkie
just starting out my bantam pen so it wouldn't be till spring

well, poppa roo was taken away from home today forcibly, for grabbing and shaking a baby. she was definitely stunned, but started coming around so i left her with mommas.
