I have 10 JG in the bator right now that hubby does not know about. Not good. I have several bantam chicks that I need to sell. Wish I could keep them all. I have 2 that are getting rehab in my living room. If they make it, they will be new additions to the coop. My girls are not going to be happy.

Anybody have any suggestions for my JG in the bator? They have been in day 3. I haven't had good luck with them in the past. Humidity is 50%. Temp is pre-set to 100F. You think I need to try a different humidity or temp? I had 1 hatch that had a lot of yolk left in its tummy. It died 3 days later. The others didn't hatch. I couldn't crack them to see what happened.

I hatched 13 of Shayna's beautiful guineas and have 28 more from corancher in the bator, plus an unknown number of turkey eggs (I keep adding to them and have to Really watch to get them to lockdown on time). My calender runnith over and I'm so CONFUSED. I had BBS Jersey giants pipping in the bator cause I forgot chickens only take 21 days . I have W/BW Am's in there too, They Are on the calender, I just have to make sure I read it. Oh and I added some EX leghorns the other day. I Need to put them on the calender too, when I think about it.

I write the set date on the eggs!! Helps to keep me straight as I am hand turning I move those close to hatch to the top. EXCEPT for the last hatch--I was 3 days behind on the calendar!! The chicks were right on time--they don't look at the calendar. Have 13 pretty fuzzy butts; and 5 are blues !!! ( I do have another blue amercana rooster waiting for these pullets!)

ok, i've decided no more quail... they're turning out to be more hassle than they're worth. except for 1.

Meet "Spincycle".

short background on 'spincycle'... at hatch, the quail went into the brooder with all the chicks. at 5 weeks old, I put him and his hatchmates (last eggs from my deceased roo) and all the chicks outside into the baby pen, with heat bulb in the house to ease the transition. the first day everything was fine. second day however, I had 1 dead quail, 1 very cold one, and 1 very scalped one. the entire back of his head was a bloody mess, to the point that it affected his ability to blink. but he didn't die. i had some newly hatched chicks, so he went in with them, as he seemed to need the heat more. but the chicks didn't bother him, or pick on him, so i left him alone.

and gradually, he started to heal. but as soon as the healing began, i realized something was wrong. he would spin in circles if something startled him (thus the name, spincycle, thanks to hubby). with some small tests, we determined that he was blind in at least one of his eyes, most likely from brain damage, as neither eye was visibly damaged. but he managed to find his way to the food and water, and continued to grow and heal, so he got to stay some more. and i became kind of attached to this little guy.

well, more than a month passed from his attack, and the 'cap' on his head (aka large scab) finally fell off, leaving a smaller, still healing area and a large lump of scar tissue. he won't win any beauty contests, that's for sure, but he still has lots of personality. who would ever have imagined a quail calmly sitting on your knee while you watch tv, or read byc? (or flash bright lights in his face)

here's a pic of his head, taken tonight. 6 weeks after being attacked by chicks he'd grown up with... pic above was taken just a few minutes later.

Hi spin ..
Can I ask how many quail and what types you have and what makes you say there more trouble then they are worth ? I have 4 bob whites and 5 jb and 1 button and they are cute but they seem to just eat and pop =P

jumbo gold and brown coturnix

they eat poop and lay teeny eggs that i don't care to eat. the dogs do enjoy the eggs tho. the hens are beating up on all the roos i have tried. so right now, to get fertile eggs, i put the roo in a neutral area (spincycle's cage right now), add the hen and remove spin. she gets bred several times and back to her cage she goes or she starts pecking the roo. he's got 1 hen that will tolerate him for more than 10 minutes, the other 3 girls aren't as nice. my biggest hen is the worst of them all. she gets bred once and then starts pulling HIS feathers out.

Maybe you shoudnt breed those hens if there so aggressive :hmm they sound like big meanie pants. I hear ya though they eat a ton and poop alot. I hear there good meat though . Im sorry your haveing so many issues with them . MIne are still about 5 weeks and really mellow but I remmber back when I had them befor I had a hen scalp one of the roos some hens seem like feathery little black widows .

I'm thoroughly disappointed right now...I had to call my 13 year old and tell him that when I candled his JG eggs that they weren't viable. He is so disappointed. We won these back in late June and the person just sent them last week. They were sent after I filed for a refund. I think that 4 weeks is long enough to wait when you're told they'll be there at a certain time. I was told there were extenuating circumstances that could not be avoided so, that is the reason for the long wait. The eggs were shipped on a Friday so, they sat, only the Good Lord knows where, over the weekend. When we got them, we candled and the aircells were just bubbles everywhere in some. They were also packed every which-a-way. So, we let them sit for 24 hours w/o any movement or touching or breathing or looking with hopes that they would come back together. Today, was a huge disappointment. They've been in since Tuesday so Wednesday was day one. There was not the first vein in all 10. I can usually tell by now if they're going to make of not. I had a feeling this would happen because I filled for the return. I'm giving them another couple of days. Maybe I'm wrong. I just have this gut feeling that I'm not. I've seen this before. Even if it's only been 4 days there should be something.

How am I supposed to know who is a reputable seller and who is not?

Look at their reviews is 1 way. Ask around to see if anyone has gotten eggs from them is another.
