So I just put in 37 barred rock and 8 of my Cornish cross x delxhamp. Can't wait to see what these turn out like. It will be better when my pure delaware cockerel is ready to do his job but the del x hamp roosters are good meat birds too so I may use some of these first offspring. Otherwise I will just butcher them when they are ready.

Well I moved SOME birds, didn't want to be overwhelmed. I moved the cuckoo hens in with the Black Copper, so I will have Sexlink Marans when they start laying again. I have an empty pen, till tomorrow, when I move pullets I am keeping out back to grow up. I also set up my young splash cuckoo roo with my reg cuckoo hen.... they maybe my start to my new cuckoos.... along with the ones in the bator and the ones going to be shipped from a breeder that SHOWS his cuckoos

My BLRW are really starting to kick in to laying.... I am getting 3-4 eggs a day most days.

now if they will just develop.

I did catch him the other day, he was showing off while I had a customer in the shop LOL I set a try of SLW, BLRW, BR and Lav AMs. That is the MOST I have set since I had them.

My test project egg hatched! I only put it in the bator to see if it would start to develope. The egg was very small so the chick is too of course. Plus I just set 8 more of them along with 37 br eggs.

Now I need to track the growth of the chick and compare it to my others so I can select some for the next generation. If these grow like I want I will use them otherwise I will use just the cross with the delawares.

A storm came through not to long ago and messed up some shingles on the house and hubby had someone come out to fix it. Well, he bartered a couple of my chickens because (according to him I had to many). Then we had another issue just this past weekend of my hubby doing me a favor to help sell some of the chickens because I have so many roos. So, he told someone that I had chickens for sale. He didn't tell them that I had bantams for sale only...so...the person comes up with young child in tow and wants to buy some chickens (hens not roos). This is my first buyer for chickens and I thought my hubby had told them only the bantams but noooo

. The child points at one of my BRs and says 'dat one.' I didn't know what to say. My daughter realized my dismay and picked up a couple of the bantams that weren't banded and offered this to the child...no...that didn't work. So, I gave in very reluctantly and sold the BR. Well, the child pointed at two of my SLs and my only Welsummer. "Dat one, dat one, and dat one." I'm thinking to myself, 'my husband must not want any eggs this year because it takes so long to grow these girls out'. By then, I'd had my fill of 'dat one' and it wasn't funny anymore
rant.gif
. I went ahead and told the dad no more large fowl just bantams. He ended up buying four bantams. As he's getting ready to leave, he wants my rooster! My beautiful, sweet, Australorp Bruce! What in the world?! I kindly tell him that we have spent extra love and attention with Bruce and that getting him now would only break Bruce's heart. Good thing was, I made $60. Now, the person that fixed the shingles on the house is coming to pick up his hens this week!

That leaves me with 9 hens. So...I guess...I get to do some more hatching. Sounds like a plan to me. If he wants to get rid of them as fast as I can grow them out, then I guess I can hatch some more to keep up with him

I got to the point with everyone wanting MY hens that I just finally tell them now "That 1 belongs to MY child/ren & they will throw a fit if I let you have it." When they point at my SQ Silkies or Si22le roo & want those, I tell them I have over $50 each in them with just MY expense & ask them how much they think I would have to charge them for MY birds. They quickly drop the subject of MY Silkies or my children's favorite pets. They take what I tell them is available or they leave empty handed.

After the first time a buyer came out and did the "that one, that one" I started penning anything I was willing to sell in a pen up front. I don't mind showing off the rest but but people that think everything is for sell get old fast around here. I did sell 4 laying hens and a pullet to a local girl for her mother after the neighbors dog killed her doz hens (after the dog was taken care of) I know how that feels and wanted her to have someting nice. Most of my older chickens are Hatchery, I didn't start hatching my own till like March of this year so most of my nice stuff is in grow penns and I need to start weeding them out before winter. (But I want to keep them all

I do that too, easy for me and customers. I put all my sale birds in pens AWAY from the others. They still ask but it is easier to say NO..... especially when they keep asking for my SLW

On another note, I moved my Wheaten Pullets outside and what are the odd EVERYONE is BLACK and not blue

May have to sell some of them too. I sold a lone pullet the other day, she was blue. I have lots more chicks growing up, maybe, just maybe there will be some blues in there. If not I have a splash roo growing up, that will fix that

I wish I had another pen but that's not happening this year. Maybe that will be a next year project. I did pull the "that's my children's bird" on the white plymouth rock, Whitney and all three of my JGs. Rio is a 3 week old BBS JG and he was really taken with him. I'm sorry but that one was mine. I had to fight tooth and nail to get that batch of eggs & he was the only one to hatch. I love my JGs. He didn't care for my Turkens and even insulted them. I think they're quite handsome and beautiful. I guess the saying is true that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder.' In fact, I would love to hatch some more of them also.

It is also good practice to keep people with other chickens away from yours. It is too easy to spread disease if you let other chicken owners near your birds. It is tempting to show off but just think about having to cull your whole flock because of disease.

I have seen some pretty ugly Turkens

Most of them are so ugly they are cute...especially the chicks

I have people requesting them constantly, so even tho I don't care for them personally, I buy or hatch any I can get my hands on because I know I won't have them long & can double to triple my money on them easily. The only Naked Neck in my coops is a little white Showgirl growing out to be part of my Silkie/Si22le/Showgirl pen. I've been looking for more Showgirls...they have kinda grown on me...also because everyone wants them.
