I use the hovabator genesis, Brinsea is a great one. I also have a Brower Tophatch. Love them all.

I have several homemade ones that work well I am a big fan of HB 1602N if you build a homemade one build it large enough so an auto egg turner will fit that is the only thing wrong with my homebuilts they are perfect other then that they were built too small

I had this same problem with my home built one. I liked the home made one better but I wanted a auto turner & it didn't fit. As for size it would probably depend on brand. I will measure mine later & post back.
