I've already read a few threads about Indian Runner ducks, but hoping to gather a few more personal experiences.
I have five ducks (two drakes, three hens - I’m planning on getting a couple more hens) they are all about four months old.
Right now they are very skittish around me (still working on that) they have a duck house and a 10*10 run - but I’d like to free range them.
My yard is about one acre, neighbour on one side and crown land on the other. I have a little bit of woods behind me, and then my parents place.
My question is - if I let them out how far would they go? And do they come back?
I’ve been free ranging my chickens for about six months, no issues (except one time they navigated their way to the street behind us and entertained all the neighbour’s).
But my chickens come when I call them, shake their food or scratch. My ducks hide in the corner of their pen when I go in with new food or water.
Anyway, any advice? Should I leave them penned? I just feel like they’d be a lot happier roaming around. (Knock on wood - I’m not too worried about predators, lots of dogs around here and the biggest issue I’ve had is a neighbour feeding foxes last winter and I just talked to them about how dangerous that was to my birds, and the fox)
