INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Isn't she lovely? :love Still thinking on what to name her, so for now she is known as 'Pretty' or 'the Silkie'. :D

Beautiful girl!!

Have fun on your trip.  Our faverolles is doing ok, she is one timid bird.  We are keeping her isolated so the flock can get to know her better.  She got lost today, but we found her 5 hours later.  Hiding from all her jerk flock mates.  They pick on her too much!

Thank you. It is one of our busiest shows of the year, and we work our tails off. Love it. However, this year I have several animals. Makes traveling to South Dakota a bit of a challenge. :-/

First of all, so happy you are enjoying your Faverolle. They really are incredibly sweet birds. Definitely timid, but so sweet and sociable with humans.
Sorry she was lost today, but glad you found her!!

Had the pleasure of checking out the Porter County Poultry Show tonight. Wonderful poultry barn. Maybe the best I have seen. If you live in NW Indiana, you should check it out.
Saw an awesome little cochin frizzle (I believe). Anyways my husband loves the frizzle. Guess I need to eventually get some frizzles. :)

A Bantam Bird-Man!
My daughter and I checked out the chickens at the Fair and saw this long-legged character. Kinda pretty and unusual, and much less scary than the larger variety! However, I had forgotten how large some roosters get and we saw a few gigantic ones-- normal breeds- RIR, BR, JG. Too bad they aren't cuddly creatures. We also saw some chicks that were either bantam or were a couple of days old because we have never seen such tiny ones.
pipd~ I saw an Egyptian Fayoumi ~ I recognized it from you adding the breed of the bird to photos, which is really helpful!
So if you just got one silkie, do you isolate her? I was just wondering because I thought you pretty much had to get two birds to keep each other company. At least that's what I've read in SOME resources. Experts don't like to agree. haha What color is yours called since she looks like she has several.

julie~ Glad all the chicks made it. I should have recognized RIR since I've had one since she was a week old.

Good thing I don't have a gun, or any aggressive animals around me!

Haha That sounds like me.
Darth Layer~ Thanks for letting us know about your hen. Wish we could figure out what the problem is!
Quinstar~ Sorry about Tansy! Is Alfie better now?
Glad to hear Cluck Acres is still doing well!
MillerBirds~ Wow, you're going to be gone three weeks doing shows! Good luck! Post pics if you can because that sounds interesting. Just like silkies, frizzles have grown on me-- I've expanded my mind outside of the classic chicken form. haha
animal lover~ I'm sure you will miss not having as many chickens, but I would think it would be a stress-reliever since so many things can go wrong with chickens. I am a slave to my seven since I have suddenly had to deal with chicken health problems-- the leg injury and the scaly leg mites. Then, I looked at my RIR this evening and thought, "Why are there feathers missing on the side of her face?!" Geez, I should have been/or married an avian vet!! ha

I have silkies hatching right now! Looks like a nice vaulted skull black silkie just popped out. These were supposed to be the last eggs for awhile, then got a message about more ccl eggs I had purchased/swapped this past spring I had forgotten about. I think they have 2 more weeks till hatch, THEN I hope o be done.

Ohh and M2H, I have started to limit myself to breeds I want. I have legbar, Rhodebars, tolbunt polish, Birchen Marans, dark cornish, and silkies/showgirls to breed and then my egg production flock of naked necks, speckled Sussex, brown leghorns, and white rocks. I don't know what you are talking about me having one of every breed. I have several of many breeds! ;). Ohh cant forget the little OEGB hen! She's living with the silkies now because the roos about squash her trying to mount her! And the ameraucanas, Araucana, and EE. Lol. But these guys might be leaving tomorrow.

Finally did the full swap over on the coops.
Put the Lavenders, EE's and Leghorns all together and put the wee Cochins in with momma Cochin, D'uccle and Silkie roo.

The Lavenders were ok with just the two extra but the Leghorns seem really pushy and I noticed the Lavenders were tucked into a corner all panic stricken. Frustrating to watch.

Got an email from someone about the SIlkie.. It said and I quote "I want please call me".. Guess I may have to reconsider that one. If that is the extent of conversation that they have to offer I think I can hold on to him for a little longer until someone sensible contacts me.

I have some breeding questions to ask if someone can help me out.

Breeding splash with splash gives splash?
How about splash with non splash?

Any suggestions on breeding purebred vs mix. I did like the looks of the Salmon Faverolle roosters that were on offer here recently to go with my Cochins. Can not seem to find any pictures of the two mixed together so I can get a better idea of what the end result would be. Might just say fudge it and get a Cochin.

Also, if I did a mix, would a 5th toe be dominate?

Any Austrolorp people on here? I just got 2 beautiful hens from Cluck Acres. An EE and a chocolate colored Australorp. After doing some research I read chocolate is recessive and rare. Any thoughts? Also I got my little black cochin Oliver back from them tonite. I missed that little guy. Tears and everything. lol I may be a little crazy.
Don't worry. I started crying when the lady was to come pick up my little Sebright (that I had listed on Craigslist mind you). I had to cancel the sale. I get it. Lol I don't have any Australorp but that chocolate color sounds beautiful.

Yes, she is isolated. I follow a strict quarantine regimen before I allow any grown birds into my flock. She seems vibrant and healthy now, but you can never be too sure. (No offense to bradselig, of course. I would quarantine no matter what the circumstances as it's to protect both the established flock and the new bird from contamination. :) ) She seems fine as far as being alone, though I'm thinking of putting a mirror or a stuffed animal in there with her to keep her company. She gets checked on frequently because she's such a sweetie and we're all fascinated by the Silkie feathering, which none of us have had the chance to see in person before. So she's not alone for very long, at least.

She is porcelain, or at the very least she looks like a porcelain Silkie. All that really matters to me is that she sure is pretty. :love

Splash with splash will produce splash, yes. As far as splash with something else, it all depends. Splash with black will produce all blue offspring, and splash with blue will produce half splash offspring and half blue offspring. I believe splash with lavender will produce all blue offspring split to lavender, but I'm not totally sure there. For the most part, everything else mixed with splash is likely to produce blue or splash versions of it (such as wheaten x splash producing blue wheaten, silver duckwing x splash producing blue silver, etc.).

Depending on what you want to accomplish, you may want to just get a Cochin. If you want to sell chicks or hatching eggs, keep it pure, but if you're just looking for a way of keeping your own flock going for some generations, then mixing breeds doesn't much matter. My assumption would be that you would produce feather-legged birds, most with fifth toes and beards, in a cross between a Cochin and a Faverolles.

I believe fifth toe is dominant, so mixing something with a fifth toe breed usually produces offspring with the fifth toe, or at least 9 toes total between their feet.

That's about all I can say without specifics. Hope it helps. :)
