INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Splash X Splash results in 100% splash offspring, so she must know her genetics just fine. ;) I have heard that the more generations of Splash X Splash you breed, the more washed out they appear as well.

This is how Blue, Black, Splash works:

Black X Black = 100% Black offspring
Black X Blue = 50% Black offspring, 50% Blue offspring
Blue X Blue = 50% Blue offspring, 25% Black Offspring, 25% Splash offspring
Blue X Splash = 50% Blue offspring, 50% Splash offspring
Black X Splash = 100% Blue offspring
Splash X Splash = 100% Splash offspring

ETA: Great minds...

I have hear breeding splash results in poorly colored birds as well. I've even seen it written that people don't recommend using splash in BLRW due to producing poorly colored blue birds. But I'm a sucker for splash blrw!

amwchickin~ Let us know how things are going. About the “Chicken Health for Dummies” book, I bought it from this site since the author is the BYC owner. Many chicken books touch on a variety of subjects, but it is nice to have a resource that is just about chicken health, whether it’s this book or a different one.

jchny~ How are Mr. & Ms. Bourbon Red Turkey doing? Is the shy girl opening up?

racinchickin~ That is incredible that your hen recovered! And she has a magnificent name. Btw, I've referred to my coop as "The Big Girl Coop" to my Orps, but unfortunately for them, The Big Girl Coop contains Five Mean Hens!
She is coming around very well, thanks for asking! they both are, and the tom is really sweet.
He finally gobbled for me the other day, and set all the other toms off, it was hilarious! Dueling gobblers

They are still in quarantine for another 2 weeks, probably longer.

So I decided to try to introduce the little family to the rest of the flock. My plan is to keep momma and the baies in the tractor next to the coop during the day, and in an dog kennel in the coop at night, until everyone is settled with each other. So I put the tractor outside, scooped up momma and the three littles, and out to the coop we went. The rest of the flock came running up to see what the new commotion was. No issues at all, just a lot of curiosity. So after about 10 minutes of that, I opened the lid and let Lavender out next to the tractor by herself to see how the flock would do. No one really even noticed her. So I let the babies out with her. OMG. The flock didn't seem to care about the kids, but Lavender got super ditzy and distracted by being out of the tractor for the first time in a month. Pecking away as the babies followed her around. One of my wyandotte hens pecked the babies lightly, and I expected a reaction from Lavender. Nothing. She just went about her business. Then she jumped up into the coop, oblivious that they couldnt follow her. So I put them up in there with her, and the Wyandotte hen jumped into the coop too. Next thing I know Lavender is flying out of the coop, babies inside with Jules still, and she hides under the coop. I dove in and grabbed the babies, got her dingy butt out from under the coop, and this is how they are now....
She has been such a wonderful mother. I don't know what to do about this submission and lack of protection for her chicks. Or maybe its just the excitement of being back with the flock. Help!
The best solution I can think of is what you did, park them by the main coop. I introduce 4-6 week olds weekly, so the flock is accustomed to changes.
In your situation, it will help the flock come to recognize them as part of the group, if they are visual, and around daily.
Mama and the chicks will get fresh air and grass that way too.
We also have birds leaving weekly to the freezer, or new homes. (although I haven't sold any for a while now) But have not had Broody experience yet.
Hoping to do more of it next year, Planning for sure to let my scovies and geese hatch their own.

Wanted to just say HI

and do a quick catch up. I hope I didn't miss any of our new members.
If I did, please, forgive me

and welcome to our thread!
Our rules are simple and there's really only one.
Chat about whatever you want to, be it a rant, how your fantastic day went, or start a hatch-along!
Its not just about chickens either. Post pictures of your child's graduation, the new car, or your cute puppy!
Many of us keep other livestock also. From alpaca to zebra someone may be able to help

This thread is ours, and good discussion is welcome. Its ok to agree to disagree on a topic!
Just remember to leave it as everyone sees things differently and is entitled to their own opinion.
The only taboo is keep it family clean as we have children & young adults that visit our thread as well.
BYC is a family oriented website, so they do ask that of us

Still crazy here... Seeking out hay and straw for winter, deworming and vaccinating all the critters.
(((shudder))) I had to buy store eggs this week, ewww!
I refuse to put a light on my birds, but been very tempted after those awful runny eggs for breakfast.
Most of my hens and my oldest roos are still in moult, be so glad for them when its over.
My pekins are still the only birds laying ugh. Duck eggs are fantastic for baking, but too rich for me as fried.
I have tried several times, and they just don't agree with me

Just a reminder, PUMPKINS! Don't throw out the jack-O-Lantern! Share it with all your birds Nov. 1st!
Many farms offer them free after Halloween too, by the truckload if you want that many!
Free healthy food/treat for your birds, and you can freeze them to share later, or cold store them several months.

Ugh--last night, I didn't get home in time to take pictures of the little ones in their adventures outside...Work has been too busy, and I didn't get home until after dark.

Today, I forgot it's flu shot day at work and I wore a long sleeve knit shirt. <Gasp> Will the sleeve fit if I scrunch it all the way up my arm, or will I have to disrobe over the shoulder in the lunchroom, in front of the other 20 people in line? ...sigh.... it's going to be one of THOSE days, I think.

It's supposed to be nice today, so I want to get home early to do a little lawn work before the rain. I hope nothing goes awry close to quitting time.

Ew, Ew, Ew, Ew, Ew!

I was out in the coop raking around the deep litter when I came across a nest of fully furred young mice. I didn't even have time to react before 26 chicken came at them from all different directions. I have never seen so much commotion in all my life.

The chickens snatched up those mice and banged their little heads on the floor, walls, and ground until they stopped moving. Then they played a few rounds of "Who's Mouse is it"! As they ripped the mice out of each others mouths, they happily ate little pieces of the mice until there was nothing left.

Have you ever seen such a thing? I had no idea chickens ate mice!!!!!!! YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
