Happy Monday everyone!

It has hardly been two weeks since I had to part with my flock and I have already made my list for next time and I really want Rhonda's Mille Fleur Cochin Roos!! I got some cochins from her in the summer and I feel terrible that they are gone.

SO, looking at the websites for chickens, which one's do you all like?

I have about 20 breeds on my "list." Do the mail-order hatcheries get mad at you if you want one or two of that many breeds? It's hard to make a order right now because most breeds are out due to it being winter. So it's kind of hard to figure costs.

Any ideas?
Most of them won't mind creating a mixed flock for you. You can call direct once you make choices, and they can give you a total.
I love my australorps and orpingtons, they are the most friendly, hardy out of the breeds I keep. I am really liking my BCMs too, my 2 roos won't hesitate to be in my lap.
Out of the bantams, my OEGB red pyle hen is my favorite.

Happy Monday Everyone!

I hope everyone had a great weekend.

We worked in the gardens and the back yard all weekend. We pulled all the dead plants out and got the gardens ready for a long winter's nap.

Our chickens got to free range on the back part of our property most of the weekend (this is a rare treat). They are usually confined to our back yard area, due to grumpy neighbors and stray dogs.

It was great to see them out and enjoying all the leftovers from the garden and all that nature had to offer them.

We will be moving to a bigger property within a month, and I am hoping to be able to give the chickens a LOT more room to roam.

Hope you all enjoyed your weekend. Hope you had time to enjoy your flock.

What is a typical age that chicks could be separated from their mom without damaging either the chicks or the mom?
Our three chicks are 4 weeks old. They are nipple trained and mom's been doing great work teaching them what to do and not to do outside.
They are feathering out everywhere, but still have down on their heads.
If 2 of the chicks leave their mother now, would the mother (or chicks) be devastated?

Is there some reason that you want to separate them?

Mom will wean them on her own..and when she's done, she's done.

Good question, Leahs mom. I should've included it with my question initially.
We had two reasons to think about separating them.
We think one of the chicks is a roo and unfortuantely can't stay with us. We wanted to rehome him under the best conditions possible. We were thinking that if we included one of the other chicks, it would make the transition easier for him.
Our coop is designed for 8 chickens, which means that keeping one chick still allows for optimal floor and roost space.

Does that give a more complete picture now?
Do you have other thoughts, given those details?
