CCHICKENS ~ Speaking of lost/late shipments, Nene's piano has not arrived! I'm going to have to contact the person through etsy.com. Usually the vendors there are very prompt. There sure have been a lot of members' reports about shipping problems lately. I guess we'll have to wait until Amazon's drones are cleared to deliver our orders!

For those of you who haven't yet been convinced of my devotion to my girls, here is a picture of my Barred Rock, Cricket, wearing a crocheted sweater because she's lost most of her feathers in her molt.

pipd ~ My BR, Tweedy, commented that Cricket's crocheted sweater is certainly an improvement over your BR Kate's pink polyester housecoat, but that BR Cricket should consider a houndstooth tweed that would complement her natural coloring. Tweedy also said that Cricket's autumn colors should now be replaced with festive jewel tones, which would be striking with her graphic display of black and white. You had better head to the yarn store, pipd! Just joking with you!

Gotta get busy and get a lot done outside today. It's supposed to be warm, relatively speaking, although chance of rain. I need to shovel a lot more mulch in the duck run which has been turning to mud lately, plus countless other unfinished tasks. Tomorrow the high for us is only supposed to be 36 and then below freezing the next 14 days after that! AAAAK!!! Frozen chicken waterers, frozen rabbit bowls....it's not even winter yet! This doesn't bode well for the next few months of actual winter

Thanks Brad, I did buy some of Nature Wise meat bird a while back.....but it is looonnnggggg gone so if they didn't like calcium , it sure didn't slow them down!!

M2h- Bonbon, I have found all of my Banty to have way more spunk than the LF. After my last dog attack I did find another EE roo, he is now full grown and trying to do his job with the ladies but my Banty Buff Brahma can kick him off a girl with no problem.

• The following is from a discussion on the Heritage Large Fowl thread. Does this make sense? They claim to have improved hatch rates immensely.

Also, I hatch in egg cartons (plastic or stryo) with eggs upright. Seems my hatches are significantly better this way since the chick is already oriented "upright" since that is the way we incubate (unlike a broody where an egg is on its side the entire time)

• Oh yes I agree with Matt and Scott on the hatching the eggs uprighted just as they have been set in the turner I now do this practice and have increased my hatch yields tremendously I have lost more eggs from taking them out of the turner at 18 days (looked promising at candling) then laying them on sides to never have much anything good come out of that move lost lots this way(ignorance) it simply kills the embryo more times than not I ve found.
• One benefit of hatching upright is the eggs don't get knocked around or turned over so they suffocate. I take egg cartons and cut them way down and then place them in there to hatch. They seem to hatch faster too.
