INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Two dozen a week? How many noodles are you making?

We are in Indy, between Lafayette square and the Art Museum, but our 7 girls are only giving a total of ONE egg a day. We'll be at the store right behind you, soon!
Boy, I wish you all were closer to Goshen! The week before Thanksgiving I had so many I took 20 dozen to the food pantry. In the last 2 weeks I've sold 16 dozen chicken & 6 dozen duck eggs, and still have 12 dozen chicken and almost 8 dozen duck eggs in the fridge. I'm keeping my fingers & toes crossed that the girls don't quit on me all of a sudden. I get panicky when midday I've only collected half of the usual amount! Especially since I'm finally getting some more new customers. I think one of the girls I got from Brad this summer as a baby laid her first egg yesterday -- there was one the size of a quail egg in the coop!

I know, right!? Alas, its really my two year old that polishes off a dozen a week. If I want to eat any or bake/cook anything else I gotta have that other dozen. Maybe one day I'll be doing noodles, but not yet.

My girls will be putting out their first eggs soon, I can just feel it.

Morning all cockadoodledoooooooooo!!! Gonna get cold out there today and looks like some of us might get buried in that white cold stuff.
Thanks for the weather reminder, I HAVE to get out there and install my heated bucket. We built this one: http://www.avianaquamiser.com/posts/Heated_bucket_chicken_waterer/
Don't be fooled it's NOT as easy as it looks we had to really finagle(is that a word?) the second bucket, but we figured it out.
Now someone kickstart me!

My girls have finally started laying decently. A few of my neighbors were shocked. They say their chickens stop in the winter all together. I am so proud of my cold weather loving foul.

Okay....fill us in:

-Breeds? (Sometimes that can be the reason for better or worse laying.)
-What do you feed?
-How much outdoor time do they get vs. indoor time?
-Have you done anything different for the winter than you do for summer?

Push the heat tape down into the goo to the bottom of the trash can.  It will waste no heat that way.  You could wrap the can with insulation or a blanket to better retain heat.

John

Nice to see you posting again John! Do you think the tape would be ok IN the feed? I'd hate to dump a 30 gal garbage pale of feed!!

M2H thanks for letting us know about Janet! Hopefully she feels better soon!!!

Off to do a few outdoor chores before everything freezes!!

Twizzlebee I am trying to get a group of people together in the Fort Wayne area that are interested in getting the law changed. Would you be interested in joing this task force? I need any support and help we can get.

Just checked our 16 day weather forecast which is through Dec. 20. After today the highest temp is 30 which is only going to happen on 2 days (3 if we're lucky). Plus a couple days next week with a high of 18 (the news last night said a low of 9 those days). Seriously?? We're gonna have to crochet heavy shawls for all the girls to wear when they go outside! OK -- time to go back out and shovel more compost before it gets dark. And we still gotta get the alpaca stall cleaned out before it gets frozen! Probably should get a shower, too, before my son's orchestra concert tonight after dealing with fragrant barnyard commodities.

Anybody get snow today??

In Indy, it's sleeting and freezing rain right now (3:50pm). I much preferred the temperature this morning when I let the dogs out compared to the cold winds that are out there now!
Yes--showers before orchestra concerts are a must. Them thar's a RE-fined buncha folks at them concerts!
