INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Man I would have had a very hard time turning those birds down, they are beautiful!  I might just want to add some of those to my flock.  If you decide to sell some eggs from them please let me know.  Or chicks, I might be willing to drive and come get them lol.  hmm I don't seem to be putting up much of a fight atm.  And I don't even know if you will be hatching their eggs.  But...this is you, and you hatch almost year round!  Please let me know lol I am very interested!

I will definitely be hatching eggs. I do have one egg from them in the incubator. They original owner said she had issues with fertility hut she never tried cutting the butt fluff. So once they settle in and fertility chexked id be hapoy to get you some eggs or chicks.

Brad: referred a person from the WV feed to you. They trying to get into raising Silkies, bought a straight run (from what i understand) and ended up with all but 1 being Roos! If you get a weird msg from someone you've never heard of...it's my fault. Lol.
haha. Thanks.

bradselig ~ OMG! I love that Cochin pair!

jchny ~ I am sending you a digital camera that was Lauren’s. We all use our iPhones for photos, so this camera has been sitting in a closet. The case has scratches from being thrown in her purse, but it works fine. I probably won’t get to the PO until tomorrow.

hogster ~ jchny is right, I normally would have researched the humidity problem, but I’m running behind on my holiday duties, so I keep telling myself to “prioritize.” I’d rather be talking about chickens! Just got the tree decorated yesterday. By the time I am done decorating, it will be time to take everything down!

minmin ~ I hope someone was around when you fell! It’s scary to think that you could have been stuck outside. I’ve heard of people putting nails or screws in the bottom of their boots as ice grippers. Anyone tried that? I bet Old Salt knows all the tricks.

I completely understand. Working on tree lights at the moment lol. Have to get this tree done today! Its my goal anyway.

I had to take a break outside I was freezing. I got 5 bales of straw packed around the west and north end of the coup, which is raised 18" off the ground. Needed to stop that wind from going under the coup too. I also made two stands, one for grit and one for eggshells that I need to get installed in the coup since they are staying indoors so much. the humidity got down to 65 today which is good, I kept the door open, but that's not a good option for night time. If the outside humidity would just drop some, I think they would be ok. Humidity inside is very close to humidity outside. Everyone is doing well. There is no more discoloration today then what was there yesterday. I didn't get any eggs today though. Oh well, I just want them warm and healthy.

Thanks!

Deb

Hogster - could you post a photo of your hen house? It sounds a lot like mine!

Last year I had straw bales around the base for a wind break. Haven't gotten any yet this year but I sweep the snow up against the base so it creates a wind break and insulation factor when we have snow.

If the snow melts later this week I'll have to get some straw again. Supposed to be in the 30s and 40s later this week if the forecast is right.

I have not seen any mice in my hen shed so far. But I have seen some mouse prints around the outside of the run. I may never have a problem but I know that some folks do in the winter.

I posted this over on the natural chicken keeping thread but wanted to post here too.

********

Has anyone used these in or around the hen houses/runs?

There are a whole group of videos here: http://www.youtube.com/user/earthkind2010/videos

You can get it at Menards and local hardware stores too.

I got some and put it where I store my feed but haven't put any in the hen house as of yet. I have seen one distributor that markets if for, and uses it in, her hen house. I just want to take some time to check it out better to be very sure it isn't harmful to the birds should they decide to take a taste.
We rescued a cat and let him deal with the mice. He has even been catching those small birds that fly through our net and the rabbits that dare get close to our driveway. He also takes care of the nasty stuff on processing day so I don't get stuck burying a giant bucket load of feathers and such.

Our area has a prediction for rain on Friday and temps above 50F. I'm looking forward to seeing the heat light go off in the coop. it only heats the water but still at night the coop looks like a red ice cube.
