I just can't get enough if these guys! I also have a sweet little hen (the oldest of all at 3 yrs old) that LOVE attention. She kept following me around! I need to pull her in and dry out her crest, but she is easily becoming my favorite.

And here is another picture for lilmizscareall, her beautiful blue girl.

Close up of the silver partridge (that's my best guess at his color). I actually love the rust color leakage!

If they need baths, dog shampoo works pretty well, keep the water out of the nostrils. They love!!!!! the blowdryer. Mine purr like little kittens when I blow dry them.

Thanks! I've yet had to bathe a chicken, so I appreciate it! I need to do a couple whites that got pooped on!

Someone decided she needed to be broody, so I decided to show her what motherhood would be like. She didn't care for it.

I can, but it's a very low coop, I don't feel comfortable putting a heat lamp in it. As far as taking them outside everyday to introduce them, I was worried about temp fluctuations. Going from 73 to even the warmer 40 we have today seems like a big difference. Hmmm. Maybe I should bring the big silkies inside lol.

Don't worry about taking them out for a little fresh air and exposure to the others. It is actually good for their little systems to be "stressed" briefly, it helps build a stronger immune system. After exposure to your older birds, keep an eye open for coccidia and treat if necessary. Especially if you put them out for good.

Ok here are some pics of my coop. I left the top row of siding off I case I needed to cut some openings for ventilation. Boy, it sure looks messy with all the melting snow, but here they are.

this is the east side, the front

. This is the inside north wall. That window is totally covered from the outside. But I think both birds were roosting up the on the wooden diverter which resulted in the frost bite.

. This is the west wall, no openings except for the eves openings. Also a window on that south wall, with a diverter on that window as well.

And since I never posted any pics of the babies mama hatched here they are.

Both are my only egg layers ATM, although mama finally laid me a brown egg yesterday!

Had to share this....you can see she is laying on her side with her leg out as if she were sunning. The warm water must have triggered her sunning posture. Silkies are such a hoot! And love the pics Brad! I try not to bathe them in the winter though;-)

thanks, yea she is a buff columbian. I love the mottled too, but not sure if I want to breed them. I'm needing more pullets as well!

For those who do fodder, where have you found to be the best place to buy seed? So far I'm looking at seedfarm.com, but I'd love to get a mix of seeds and not all just one kind. I'm only looking at getting about 5# right now to give it a try and see if I can actually grow anything lol.

How far away are you from Topeka? (It's a bit south of Shipshewana.)

I get all my feed grains from Honeyville Feed. They have non-gmo, likely gmo, and organic choice by the 50 lb bag.

Today's prices:

Corn:
non-gmo $6.85 50 lb bag
organic: $16.21 50 lb. bag


Wheat is high right now don't remember price.

Didn't price Barley or oats but last time I purchased they were about $12/ 50 lb bag for organic.


If you purchase one of the grains that they use lots of, they will usually allow you to purchase by the lb. However, the price is higher per lb. for less than 50 lbs. than it is by the bag.

Prices change based on the market so you have to call ahead and get a price before going and be sure they have what you need. They will usually be able to get whatever you want by next day if they don't have it in their stock.

Since I'm just starting to practice with fodder, I didn't want to have a huge bag of seed. I bought barley on Amazon for crazy expensive. I accidentally fermented my first batches and needed more seed. I've been buying 5lb bags of seed at a garden store on 71st st in Indy.
When they stop carrying the seed, I'll go to the local home brew stores and get it for $1.20 per lb.
Crazy, right? Can't find grain at TSC but can go to a beer store?
5 lbs was a good amount for me to start with.
