INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

:,(. Of all nights to come home to this. Spent a nice evening with 5 of my 6 children and their significant others, 9 Grandchildren, two nephews, one sister and my precious momma. Came home and checked on my Chickens outside...it's only 30 in their coop brrrr!!!! But they are all cuddled up and warm. Came inside greeted by a bouncing and happy doggie. Checked on my Bitties in the brooder... found one dead and one so weak it probably won't live the night. They are the two that had the pasty bottoms. Now there are three more with pasty butts... What can I do???? What can the problem be?

I've come across the opportunity to get one of my favorite chicken breeds and will be picking up a few varieties this coming weekend! Modern Game Bantams! I'm getting a pair of Birchens and a Trio of Blues. Once I get there I may also get a pair of Brown Reds! After trying earlier this year at obtaining this breed and it not working out makes me even more excited to get them!

That is awesome! I really like the OE game bantams. Is there any breed you don't have?

Thanks for all the congrats on the broody hen guys. She is doing great do far. She kicked one egg out of the nest today, so we are down to ten.

Merry Yule and Merry Christmas everyone!

They need a place to get away from the brood lamp so they aren't too hot. Let them decide where they will sleep - either close, far away, or middle. They'll situate themselves either close to the lamp or away from it depending on the heat.

Most folks err on the side of too much heat with nowhere to get away from it.

I don't remember what age your littles are.

97 sounds high if they don't have enough space to get away from it.

sorry to hear about the chicks. I hope the rest are okay

???? Can you use sugar in the water with the ACVm in it too? How warm should the brooder be? Is 97 too warm? Not warm enough?

I missed that you were giving them AVC. No, don't add it? You can put a little powdered milk on their food. Not much though. And Leahs Mom is right, make sure they can get away from the heat. Also, if they are huddled in a pile under the lamp they are not warm enough.

They aren't huddled under the heat and have enough room to get away from it if they want to. I believe they are a week old today. When I checked in them again a few mins ago (2nd time today) they were all chirping and playing around but I noticed there are more pasty butts that needed cleaned up. I'm so frustrated the first batch of chicks I had back in June never had any of this! I never lost a single one! The bitty that was so weak last night isn't standing up at all nor wanting feed n water. Is just a matter of time with it now. : (

you can feed it sav a chick through a syringe or calf manna (powder mixed with water, i dont use the pellets)
