Just thought I'd post this to help enable others! Hardin Poultry is having a great deal right now! Spend over $100 excluding shipping charges on their website they will refund $50 back! This is good through 1/10/14. I ended up getting 12 tolbunt eggs and a jubilee orp egg for $67.50 shipped minus the $32 I had in my paypal account from selling chickens/eggs and I only paid $35.50 out of pocket (well more until they refund the $50). And I think it has to be OVER $100, exactly $100 won't cut it.

Hi. How chickens do you have and what breeds? Since you seem to know kabhyper1 I am going to venture to say she has conned you into some silkies

crossing my fingers that they adjusted well.
i would leave them in their for probably 2 or 3 days, just to make sure they know after you let them out they should probably come back to that coop. Congrats on movinginto your new place! I am sure your chickens will be very approving once they get to run around on the two acres.

It's a shame we don't live closer! I fit the "hippie" or "crunchy" requirements fairly well...
I run from anything that smells of baby powder. I'm the clutter queen, but since moving have made a pact, with myself, to eliminate the excess.
I did not do a home birth, but after my first(all natural/water) I'd do it in a heartbeat.
Ha, TMI for some of you!

For my purposes in finding a sitter willing to come to my house:
Ina May would be a familiar name and not in a bad light.

Homesteading and farming would not be things of the past but normal healthy choices.

Animals including chickens and chicks would not be only thought of as stink makers needing to be cleared off of the property.

A running chicken would not be a cause to take cover as in an alien attack.

Clutter would not be a reason to freak out and start trying to get the house in perfect selling order.


Of course I would have other requirements too, like good with toddlers, not scared of cotton diapers, ....


But my three biggest issues right now with finding someone willing to come here is the chicks downstairs/ the chickens outside, chicken related clutter, and the cotton diapers.

Awesome. One thing with chickens (and with most things) you are constantly learning new things.

Quail eggs are a pain to crack open without getting shells in the egg or to peel when boiled, but they sure are tasty!! Feel free to come visit our barn anytime you're this way

Thanks! I am really smitten with the Cochins and have only had them a couple of months. I guess I am glad I am out of room or I would be searching for a splash or a lemon blue Cochin to add to the flock (or both!). As far as my coop, It is a nice building and huge, so my hope was that there was plenty of space for the moisture to rise up. I added a couple of vents but they are only very slightly above chicken roost level. I was doing it by myself so I couldn't get very high. I have not cracked a window, do you think it would help? The windows are also at chicken roost level, but they roost in the back where there are no windows so drafts wouldn't touch them. I have had a heated dog bowl outside, but they won't exit the coop in this weather so I have been bringing water buckets into the coop for them and breaking the ice a couple times a day. I have a cord running into the run for the dog bowl and can bring that into the coop - I just hate to add any more moisture. With such a severe drop in temp I feel like I should, though. If they won't leave the coop on severe days I'm sure they won't for that 3 day below zero streak we have coming. I guess it is a darned if you do, darned if you don't situation. No matter what you do there are draw backs! I would also hate to bring them in or add severe heat because then it will be a shock when it gets taken away.

Farker Farms ~ I'm interested to compare Cochins to my English Orps because they seem to have a lot of similarities.

As far as dealing with chickens and their coop in the terrible cold:
My dog bowl in the coop hasn't been a problem as far as excess moisture, but my heat probably helps. As I mentioned in last night's post (pg. 1898, post 18980), I don't have a big heater or anything that heats the whole coop. I just use a ceramic heater emitter bulb and a ceramic fixture specifically for the bulb, and a screw-in mount and guard. Ceramic heat emitter bulbs are sold for different purposes, including heating coop areas, but I was familiar with them from having bearded dragons before. There are various companies that make the products including Exo Terra, Komodo, ZooMed, and Fluker's. You can research them online and read reviews on Amazon or other sources. It's very important to use the correct ceramic fixture that corresponds to the correct ceramic bulb and wattage.

Disclaimer: I am not promoting any products nor am I encouraging anyone to use heat in their coops. I am relating my personal experiences and knowledge of the subject. If people choose to use heat, it is their responsibility to thoroughly research the topic, read product specifications, and make their own decisions.

I've been so busy with work, family, and "farm" I am drowning in posts!

Christmas Eve I drove up to Brads to pick up a couple silkies and even returned with some birds to Indy for SallyinIndiana!
Those BLRW were so pretty, and now I'm all googley eyed for one of my own...
That got me thinking...I only have brown and cream egg layers(IF they ever start laying), so I need to start up an order somewhere!

Anyone out there interested in going in with me??? I saw Gabbard Farms has a nice selection, but they don't seem to have the best reviews. I know it's going to be awful cold over they next few weeks, which means I'm not in a huge hurry. I just want to see if I can manage birds into my budget without ending up with +25 all to myself.
