INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

ohh the temptation! I really shouldn't as I need to get the rest if the chickens set up in breeding pens. Not add new breeds/species right now. But at some point I'll have to get some from you!

Sounds good! Let me know when you are ready. We have plenty of time ;)

Those of you that use the "ring" bands, can you send a link that shows where you got them? Not having used a band before, it seems that it would be really hard to get them on and off.

I've been thinking about the zip ties (which you can get really cheap at TSC or places like lowes, etc.). I did see the other day the Flemming sells the zip ties for use as bands http://www.flemingoutdoors.com/chic...=chicken-leg-bands---zip-ties&channelid=LSCA2

If I use them I'd leave them very loose.

Just found that Strombergs has colored AND numbered zip ties

I need some help big time!!! I just took my rooster back out to the coop (he is doing fine) but I noticed his top hat is full of mites! I can't bathe my chickens in this cold. Will a flea dust work? How will that get rid of the ones walking around the coop???? Help!!!! They are on me!!!! I am freaking out!!!!!

I am very careful as to who takes my birds home.
Me too. On a thread about dumb craigslist calls we have gotten in the past, people have talked about how people will try and buy there chickens for sacrafices. I had someone try to buy some for sometime of culture thing. I said I didn't have any more. I could barley understand them.

So I've been thinking about the numbered leg bandettes. I was getting ready to order 25 bands of each size. However it got me thinking. You really don't want to tag any chick or growing bird. If you did, you will have to buy many sizes in say white numbered 1-25 so the chicken is tagged the same the whole time. You can't just buy the small size in 1-25, medium in 26-50, etc. as when the chick ages, you will be changing its number with each leg band. So if you are tagging chicks with the bandettes, you will be having to purchase a lot of bands only to not use the smaller sizes. I'm hoping I'm making sense, hard to explain what I'm trying to say lol.

So I think I'm going to be buying a bunch of the spiral bands to use on growing chicks. Once they become adults, then they will "earn" their numbered leg band. That way I'm only buying one size for each breed. This may have been common sense to most if you, but I didn't realize it until right before I placed my order lol.

I saw those last night. After really thinking about it, Ive decided not to get numbered bands until they have stopped growing. Other wise you have to buy a lot more numbered bands only to not use the smaller sizes they out grew. Of course numbered zip ties would be different since you just cut them off but you'd still be wasting a lot of ties of the same number in a growing chick.

I got my first set of numbered bands from meyer, my next set from cutlers,
The leg bands work much like the slap bracelets. They are not too hard to get on or off. If they are too loose the chickens can get them off. They do not do great in extreme cold. I had one snap in half.
I have used the toe punch once now. I'm not sure I like it yet. the chick's feet have to be cleaned at least once a day to keep the nasty stuff out of the hole. It was easy enough to punch on the 3 day old chick though. I would not be able to use the toe punch on a fully grown chicken though as the webbing is too thick.

Editing to add I got my chicks from Ideal, and they are looking great. The box arrived much sooner than I expected. When I had ordered from OH it would ship in Monday and show up on Thurs. But this time the chicks came from TX with a ship date of Wed and arrived Thurs. The chicks were sent out late Tuesday night, instead of Wed morning but still the travel time was less than coming from OH.
