INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

So I shouldn't, but anyone interested in going in on an order? I'm only interested in 4-6 chicks but his minimum is 12. Let me know if anyone is interested"

Just putting this out there again. So far I believe there are 2 people (including myself) possibly going in on an order. If we can get a 3rd, shipping will only be $12 per person, 4 people about $9, etc. if we don't hit 20 chick, I'm paying for the heat pack. Over 20 chicks, heat pack not needed. Let me know if anyone is interested and what breeds, then I'll try to get an estimate lead time before placing to make sure it works for everyone. I'm more than happy to work with you on pick up if you aren't close.

He's beautiful! I love the red on his wings but that's why I kept my roo too

Thank you! It's interesting to me how they can have all of those different colors EE's must really be a box of chocolates genetically. His dad is full SL/W so the red is sure not from him!

Quote: This is such a great deal. I wish I could, but I still have hatching eggs coming as well as 3 turkeys this spring. Plus I am on the list for some Blue Sumatra Eggs. I need patience till my favorites arrive.

For those of you looking for good quality chickens, now is the time to jump on this. It sure beats buying lower quality chicks from the feed store or paying a fortune for a small order from the hatchery for mid quality chicks. And shipping from most breeders is going to be at least $35 with chicks priced at or above $6. Several breeds to choose from too although the rosecomb RIR would be my choice.

You are spot on about how great an opportunity this is that Brad is offering, Sally. But I'm in the same boat as you. I'd love to order some Dorkings. I can't though, I need to focus on my chosen breeds. Must resist chicken math!!

DH is raising the net, then I'll be moving the messy messy ducks out of my new chicken coop.

I'm so happy.

Of course there are so many tiny things that need to be done to move the ducks, but the biggest was raising the net as the snow had collapsed part of it.

Got to see Patrick today too.  His Cream Legbar breeding program is sounding wonderful.   It won't be long and everyone can start getting on his list for chicks.

Brenda Mick, east side chickens Facebook, has ducks to rehome if you or anyone you know are interested. Pekin and silver wing I think. I don't know much about ducks.

It's in the 40's, the snow is melting, and though it seems dreary outside, I'm just happy to be rid of all this wretched snow! (Two months or so until spring, right? :fl )

So I've been busy the past few days because I'm preparing for classes starting next week, and then the two hens in my flock with the largest wattles, Olive and Miss Rangi, had frostbite on Tuesday morning so they had to come in out of the cold. They're back outside today, but I'm keeping a close eye on them--I think they might both lose portions of their wattles as a result of this. :/ The rest of the girls are just fine, by the way, and had no problems even without supplemental heat, so I think it was just poor ventilation together with their big wattles spelling disaster. My first summer project this year is going to be a look at improving winter ventilation, I think.

On a similar topic, does anyone here use a huddle box around their perches? Any ideas how that works without trapping moist air around the birds and making matters worse?

I'm going back and reading (well, skimming) through what I missed. 20 pages to go! :th

I don't have a huddle box, but having openings at the top of the boxes will keep moister out of the boxes, humid air rises.

In my opinion, by the time you buy all the stuff to make your own incubator, you could buy one at Rural King and have something that you could resell if you don't like it.  Homemade incubators are nearly impossible to resell and may or may not work well, depending on your skill/knowledge.

Skilled hatchers have difficulties with shipped eggs.  Only try to hatch eggs that you get locally from trusted BYC'ers.

You will find that hatching your own eggs to get chicks on a small scale will cost several times the price of purchasing hatchling chicks.  If you are doing it for fun, then have at it!  If you are doing it for economy, forget it.

Do you feel rain landing on your parade?

John

I've been planning to get a roo for quite some time and see if I get any fertile eggs. I dont order fertile eggs, I only do local. Who says I'm going to try to sell The incubator? I'm doing this mainly for fun. It's a good learning experience also. Maybe it will be a success and I will end up with some chicks.
No rain landing on my parade, just some melting snow and chilly weather, finally. :weee

Quote: Dh and I had a talk before I ordered new ducklings. I have to wait before getting any more ducks. The main thing to know is that they are messy and can turn a nice brand new clean coop into a disgusting filthy frozen puddle of poo. Poo everywhere, in the clean water in the wet feed, mud too. BUT their eggs are great for baking and my DH really really likes them fried. Still after dealing with the mess, Dh and I have decided to see how the ducks do for at least a year before getting more. Maybe it was the extreme freeze this year or maybe ducks are just not as easy as people make them sound. During the summer and fall they were super easy and did great at foraging. Still if you could see what just 2 ducks did to my coop, you would understand my DH's wanting to wait before getting more.

I used to have ducks. Never again. They are messy. They are very good at destroying things. I couldn't stand my mallard drakes, they were mean to everything. My two pekin girls were nice, but didn't want to be messed with. If I ever got ducks again I would only get call ducks. The only down fall with them is they are really flighty. My other ducks were too fat to fly. Its not for everyone, as most things aren't.

You can sell your eggs to him, but it is illegal for him to sell them at a farmers market because your chickens have to be certified. If they were certified by the gov, it would be legal. But that means a yearly fee and tax for every egg sold. The Indiana egg law stinks,

I sell most of my eggs on my property and I let them do whatever they want with them, that way there is no trouble. I don't have a license either, but its on the retailer if he does.
You can check out the egg selling thing here:

I didn't see that part. I sure don't know if I should keep doing this. He wants to buy all I get but I don't want it coming back on me if he gets busted. Just don't know if its going to be worth it after all. what he got today paid for my feed and treats, I thought that was great. but ????? I don't know guess I'm going to do some more reading up on it?? thanks for the site it is a different one then I got.

My khaki's are not supposed to fly but they do, at least we have seen them fly as high as 10-15 ft in the air in circles around our backyard. Since then they have been in covered runs only. They are not mean and they do a great job of teaching the chicks to forage, but the mess is so unreal.
I had chickens last year in the winter, their water and bedding never turned to mush. This year there is mushy bedding and yuck in the new coop. I felt bad showing it to Patrick today.
But the ducks are in their own area now that just happens to be flooded into a duck paradise. I'm hoping they do well by themselves and stay warm as I know we will have some colder temps coming before spring.

Quote: My questions when someone wants to buy all I have:
Are my prices fair to me or are they below market value?
If the prices are fair and a profit is being made, do I need to have more of this item since I'm selling out so fast?
And finally if it is just one buyer, why did they choose me and is there a way I can be even better so they won't move on to the next guy? Never want to lose a good paying customer.
