INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hey guys ive got a prohlem. i came home to check on my chickens and one is acting really weird. All the others run when I come in but she doesnt and its completely out of character. So I bought her inside and checked her over. She has a couple of cuts and scraps on her comb and her toe has a piece of torn skin. I took her back out per my moms request and found that im missing a hen. I checked the house and found a pile of dead bird. a coon most likely got in and killed my Baby. I'm really upset about that bc she was the only one of my birds that i hatched and raised myself but now the answer is clear as to why my other hen is acting weird.
I'm familiar now as to the symptoms and what will happen to her in a matter of days as this happened just last year to a chick i got out of a group that was terrorized by a coon and she didnt make. I am at a loss here and i don't want to lose another chicken that way. it was hard enough when the chick died thrashing in my arms I dont want that to happen to this one. I have heard that chickens cant get rabies but i suppose it could be transfered in this case, or she will get a blood infection of somesort. Please, please help me I dont want her to suffer but if there is a chance i can save her im willing.
Thank you so so much for any help you can give.
I am sorry for your loss, hope your 2nd hen continues to improve.
Hello everyone!! I have missed you all very much! I hope everyone's holidays were great! I think of everyone on here as my "extended" chicken family, and I am always referencing something from this website at least everyday!

The past several weeks has been really busy. Our family has been having a rough time lately and against my wishes, I had to re-home my hens to my sister, hopefully just for a while. I really love my girls and I miss them everyday. With everything that has been going on it was just getting a little much to take care of. Things are starting to look good again though. My DBF is getting layed off from his job at Rolls Royce, but fingers crossed

he might have just secured a nicer, more paying job! So.....hopefully that means that maybe we might be able to really look for a house this year and move to somewhere that is a little more in the country mabye! I miss my red sexlink Big Red everyday and i miss her eggs even more! So now that things are starting to look up here, I'm thinking about getting back in the game, possibly with a different and bigger coop as well. I am scouring sites for BLRW and I have missed a couple of opportunities from here as well, but it seems that they are very, very popular breed!!!!! So keeping my eyes open.

All these pictures of all these silkies is really making me want to get some!! The only problem is that I can't really have any roos. But they look so cute and friendly!!!

I am very sorry to hear about everyone's losses this winter. I hope that you are able to find happiness again! I am still behind by one week in posts but I am gaining. I am glad that I am going through because I have gained some knowledge and I love reading everyone's stories and seeing pictures!!!

Miss you guys and talk to you soon!!!

I looked at it, but it is large and the electricity savings is not as nearly as much as the 20 one. Since I plan to hatch frequently in smaller batches this year, I want to try the smaller one. I do have a metal brooder box for my larger hatchery orders that is economical with its heating element. It was costly too.
There is no get rich fast scheme in selling chicks for me. Just a lets use the money to buy more chicken feed and stuff.

I will be doing larger sized hatchings, that is why the 50 would be better for me. Me either, my chickens have yet to pay for there feed, but I haven't started selling a lot yet, only a hand full. I really don't ever see a profit coming from them, but that is perfectly fine by me, thats not why I keep them.

Since we are talking about selling chickens. I just saw a pair of buff leghorns go for $170 (juvinelles) on facebook and 6 orp (dont remember coloring) chicks are up to $725 on the rare breeds auction! Holy cow! And the bidding on the chicks isn't even over. I just window shop on the rare breeds auction website lol

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to spend close to $1000 on a pair or trio of chickens and not think it a waste or wonder how the money could be better spent?  I'm not against someone spending their fortune on chickens or paying that much, I do know it won't happen for me.

Ya, I would never spend that much on a pair. I spent $60 on a pair of white rocks, but have more wrapped up in them with gas. I just think it is crazy to spend that mich on chicks, they coild all turn out to be cockerels

Lol Goatluver, you are so lucky that they ignore your chickens. Okay, she is acting more active when I left and I put sugar in her water in a bowl and left some corn and feed in the cage too. I just, I don't want to go home and find her laying down unresponsive and then her start thrashing like Survivor did.

Sorry, I get attached to my babies, I know its not good because stuff like this happens but I can't help it.
Funny though, I named that chick Survivor because out of four they were the only one that didn't get eaten by that coon and then only to have it lose in a final battle. But now, being able to post on here and get advice within minutes I may be able to save this one. And even if for some reason I can't I will feel a little better knowing I did something other than just hold her.
