INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

well I asked if anyone had any eggs they wanted hatched as a joke, but got an offer I cant turn down, I will be putting chicks under her this weekend and have fresh eggs in with her now hoping to trick her into thinking she hatched them. Got that trick from here. It's a bit early than I wanted but hey when opportunity knocks.....
Good luck! I hope it works for you. I think sometimes the urge to be a mother can only be broken by them actually having chicks. It's good you are trying that way also, sounds like she can't afford to sit much longer since she is losing weight. I'm not sure if it mentioned it, but it would be best to put the chicks under her at night. Keep an eye on her too. Sometimes the best sitters aren't great mothers. She should be fine, just an fyi.

yea it said to put them under her at night and I came up with my own thing to ( it just makes sence ) the same time I put the chicks under her I will also have a busted egg from breakfast that I will put under with it. make her think it really did hatch... worth a try I think.
will diffidently keep an eye on her I would like to keep these chicks I'm getting. So I'm

that this works.
I am giving her bread and water right next to her and she is eating now without throwing it back up. that's a good sign. Think tonight ( if she continues to hold her food down) I will put crumble next to her. and then tomorrow afternoon I may put her scratch in. Here hoping!!!!!

Quote: It might help if the shell smelled like her. If you had an extra egg that you did not mind feeding back to the flock maybe sneak it out there the night before the chicks. Then you can pull the egg, break it and put it back. After all when the chicks hatch the shells are not dry by any means.
But I have to say a just hatched egg shell smells nothing like a just cracked into the frying pan egg shell. There is an afterbirth placenta smell. Its hard to describe the smell if you have not smelled something being born / hatched. I have smelled the smell a few time, cats, chicks, babies, rabbits, it is not something a nose forgets. I have woke up smelling the smell just to rush and see a new chick out of the egg. The benefits of having the incubator within 50 ft of the bed.

It may be helpful to put the chicks in some bedding that smells like her the night before you give them to her. Maybe some of her bedding in theirs. She will maybe take to them better if they smell like she actually hatched them.

Okay guys I have a deal for someone! A pair of buff bearded silkies for free to good home only, meaning no killing, eating etc... One for sure roo, I think the other is a pullet, but not for sure. She sure looks girly to me. They are very sweet birds. I am advertising for a friend. They are in North Liberty. I am posting on here because I know you all won't kill and eat a nice pair of silkies. They are 9 months to a year old.
Aww they are beautiful!! I am actually looking for some Silkies to raise and show and i may be interested but id have to convince my parents. How soon does your friend want to give them away? I haven't gotten started on my mini coops I plan on keeping my smaller show chickens in but as soon as it warms up I'm starting on them. So you can mark me as a maybe perhaps? :) But they are absolutely gorgeous! <3

I'm not sure. He wants a good home for them. If you can let me know soon, I can see if he will hold them for you. Are you near St joe county at all?

I will do that I have 3 eggs under her now so I will take 1 at a time and crack it and then replace it, don't know what to do about the new babe smell. but some is better then none.
I think if I had a incubator within 50 ft of my bed my DH would throw something... lol he spoils me but I think that would be pushing it just a bit .. lol
