yep she kept it down thinking about giving her a little bit more. I just put some chick grit in with her and she eat a bit of that and is back to laying down again. am going to put her back with her eggs, but she still has not pooped, sorry I know gross

I wonder if you get those chicks under her if she will start eating. She will instinctively show them where food is, so she will get off the nest. When do you get them?

Don't think me too geeky, but I weigh & keep track of eggs laid every day by size since I sell them by size. I set up a spreadsheet so I can enter the numbers & let the computer figure out the totals & dollar value of eggs collected/sold (we need it for our taxes). I just finished entering last years numbers. Half of our girls didn't start laying until September. Our grand total for eggs laid in 2013.....4215 -- that's 351.25 dozen!!

We sold 164 dozen & donated 51 dozen to the food pantry, but that still left us with a lot of eggs for eating. Plus we had duck & quail eggs too -- whew! I wonder what this year's total will be with all the girls laying the full year plus the new chickies I'll be getting this spring

That sounds like something by geeky son would do. lol. I wish I had that type of brain, but luckily I'm not in the egg business or I'd surely be broke. I'm sure you know that you can deduct a percentage your charitable donation as well as your coop, supplies, etc. etc. I admire your bookkeeping because that is so important. I was surprised when I asked the farm owners where I bought my orps about their birthdays, and they said they didn't keep records of hatch dates because they were just too busy!

Btw, I've been finding wrinkled eggs lately. I'm guessing they're from my RIR since as I mentioned last night, hers are a lower quality as far as size and shell. I have oyster shell calcium as free choice and I see her eating it. I found wrinkled eggs before and after Jersey's death, so I don't think it's stress related. I've read that infectious bronchitis can cause that, but she and the others seem fine. I've cracked them open before and they look normal inside.

I also have a spreadsheet and am weighing and recording every egg. We're only getting 1-3 eggs a day so far - from a half dozen 6.5-month old hens - so it hasn't been difficult. I can distinguish between eggs from my BAs and my EEs of course, but I don't know which individual chickens are actually laying and which aren't.

I will fully admit to being a geek.

I agree....I thought it looked way too small for that many too. But I don't think I'll ever brood that many anyhow. Unless I get really adventuresome and do 20 meat birds at a time.

Mother2hens did you post an add on craigslist for some jubilee orpingtons?

goatluver~ No, I actually wanted a Lavender Orpington pullet, but I needed another one to keep her company, so that's how I chose a English Jubilee Orp (named Adeline). I wanted to be able to go to an actual farm to get them and because they're more expensive than like my RIR for example, I wanted to be guaranteed pullets. I checked around some places online and someone on the English Orp Thread mentioned chickenscratchpoultry.com and they're only an hour or so away from me in McLeansboro, IL. It's a nice place and the couple are very nice, but as I mentioned in my last post, I thought it was strange that they didn't keep hatch records.Unfortunately, my Lavender (named Violet) hurt her leg and eventually I had to have her put to sleep. I needed a quick replacement to be the Jubilee's buddy, so I went to the same farm and picked out an English Chocolate Orp (named Bonbon). I didn't realize at first that they are bantams, but it worked out well because she has no idea that she's little. lol. They've integrated with my RIR, BR, SLW, and EE known as The Mean Girls.

I've heard bradselig talking about hatching Jubilees, so maybe he'll add them to his list!

I think I have settled on a run with tiered raised garden beds around the perimeter. Then I can put herbs and tomatoes in it (and I don't care if the chickens eat the tomatoes). That way the tiered beds will help me deal with the slope of the hillside (I think). I don't know. I'm so new to a project this size! Looking forward to it, though.
