INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Cheryl, I am so sorry!

I know you loved that sweet girl. She's lucky that you were taking such good care of her inside your home. Hopefully, you can find some answers.
Thank you! I really did. She was in my original group of chicks, but she was the only one that was mine specifically. She was bossy, funny, and always interested in what I was doing, but would also let my kids hold her any time they wanted.

Once again, I am so happy I was reading this thread while I was waiting to hear back from Perdue. Even though I saw those links everyone kindly posted today during my search last night, I still reopened them to see if I missed anything. One took me to the Perdue ADDL link where they had a different phone number than the one I had called and a different person all together. It saved me so much time, so THANK YOU all again (3 times

).

I was able to get Lucy there today and back to Greencastle with 10 minutes to spare before picking my kids up from school. Now I just get to sit here and wait to see if my ignorance caused this or if it was out of my hands. I am trying to stay positive and think that even if it was something I could have helped, that I am now learning from it and I'd do better next time. There are so many kinds of chickens I want to have now and I've had expansion plans since before my coop was completed. Now, I'm not even sure I will be able to have more any time soon.
M2H= thanks I have been so busy past 2 days that I cant even keep up with the thread let alone research. thank you. I don't have the calf any more he didn't make it. DH wants to get another one, but I told him he would have to get him past the ruff patch cause I just cant take the dying thing well.
and besides my chickens will like it and every little bit helps.
I'm really sorry about your calf!

Travis says me and chickens is a slippery slope and no going to tsc during chick days. I have a month to figure out a master plan. Muahahahaha

I agree about slipping the eggs under a broody. I mean really, will he notice if your chickens are hatching eggs? So what if they don't look exactly like their parents. Just tell him they must be recessive genes and give him one of Pipd's genetic messages and it will all make sense. I'm sure she could write you something really convincing because she'd want to see the new chick pics too.

chick rookie~ I found these posts:

racinchickens ~ I bet that does save a lot of energy. The only reason I don't hang clothes/bedding outside is because of allergens adhering to fabric. We have enough allergy problems without sleeping in sheets coated with pollen. I used to get cat-allergy injections-- well, I couldn't get rid of my cats as the allergist suggested!
Do you still get allergy shots? I get allergy shots every 3 weeks. They say they will not go away (sometimes the allergies disappear), so pretty much I will be getting them for the rest of my life. Mine aren't just for cats though, lots more, just too much to list! They have made my life so much better, I can tell when I need one, sometimes spot on. The only bad part was getting tested for them!

It was great meeting you guys as well and I'm officially in love with alpacas! Lol. Your flock is lovely and obvious that you really love your birds (and other animals). Looking forward to working with you in the future to broaden the genetics of our silkie flocks!

Here is an updated picture of the little white and grey chipmunk striped chick I hatched out several weeks ago. I'm loving the colors on it and hoping it turns out a silver partridge!

I was at Martinsville Rural King today picking up some chicken feed and saw a paper posted in the feed section. Said they would be getting their first batch of chicks for Valentines Day. Seems a lot earlier than most years, I thought they usually got chicks in April?
I think it said the first batch would be RIR, BR, ISA brown and EE pullets. It also mentioned something about special orders for rare breeds. (Dont know what those breeds are)
Just in case anyone is waiting on chicks thought I'd pass this along.
wheezy ~ That does seem early. Maybe it's a new strategy to market them for Valentine's Day in addition to Easter! I think that our "Chick Days" sales at RK begin in early March.
(M2H posted):
We have a really cool Japanese Maple that always has seedlings if anyone wants any. It will be several months, but I can dig them up and save them." House Kat ~ No problem unless we never see warm weather again! It's 7 degrees now, but I suppose we're lucky compared to our Indiana members north of us.

House Kat ~ What a story about your cat! Yes, those allergy docs tell you to get rid of your animals like it's nothing. No, can't do that.
Then they tell you to not hang clothes on the line and to shower/change clothes if you've been outside. I can do that, especially when I can see that the deck is coated with yellow pollen.

House Kat ~ Btw, did your new shed/coop get installed? (I hope!)
chick rookie ~ You're having a rough time trying to care for your injured DH as well as all of your chickens in this horrible weather. I think everyone on this thread has gone through chicken deaths and feelings of helplessness-- some have had much worse times than others. I've felt "over my head" many times since I've had chickens. Just as I was feeling confident about looking over my chickens for any signs of problems, then I realized that I missed the fact that my Jersey had a large tumor growing-- I just thought she was a big, fat Jersey Giant! I felt like I let her down although she would've have ended up being put to sleep at the vet's anyway. I know that we all shouldn't be so hard on ourselves. At least we're all here to learn and improve.

hogster ~ That's terrible about your husband's thumb accident! Hand surgeons are more common now and can do amazing things-- like re-attach an entire hand! That's good that your DH has been getting physical therapy and follow-up care. Hope your mom is doing okay since you said you're in Michigan.
