INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Brad, the babies are just too precious! :love Did you ever receive the elastic bands from the seller?

Thanks everyone for the kind thoughts about my geese.
thanks! I did finally receive them! They are the green bands on a couple of those chicks in the picture. I LOVE them! I'm going to be ordering some larger sizes of them (I think they go up to 5/16 and possibly 3/8") once they out grow these, then I'll be using the zip ties. Once they get to be adults, they will graduate into their adult numbered bands!

Brad, any word on the silkie egg that wouldn't hatch? Have you candled the other ones yet?

M2H, if Bon Bon is still acting a little broody, I would check her comb for scabs from a scratch. Those combs bleed like crazy! If she was tucking eggs under her with a bleeding comb, they would get blood on them. Also the splatter on the wall could be from a good head shake with a bleeding comb.

Gosh Dangit!!!! We have beard lice on the silkies. Grrrrrr. They are still in my den, so I carefully poultry dusted the bedding, and their backs, because I didn't want to apply it directly to their faces. I hear lice is bad this year. I feel awful because they have been inside for a month now and I never noticed their beards being crusty by the skin. No crawlies that I could see. Vents don't have any either. I wish it would warm up outside so they could dust bathe.
i sent ulna. PM about the egg. Looks like a dud :( looked exactly the same as it did at your house.

Sorry to hear about the lice! Nasty little guys.

Over the weekend I found what I think was someone's attempt at an egg...

Coming out of one end was what looked like albumen.

Here's the new-used coop:

The previous owner was a teenage boy who named several of his hens after Jersey Shore characters, hence the Snooki and J-Wow painted on it.

Thats a very odd egg! The coop looks promising, will give you a great start!

Awesome, I have that seller saved, and I am going to do some looking at sally beauty supply too.
I will probably get those from the seller right away to mark my quail with. Are they too small for quail?
Still trying to get that 2nd bloodline, hopefully soon....
Too bad on the last silkie egg Kab.

M2H,
You know I am a total newb so take this for what it's worth, but could it be vent picking?
I read about that in the article about nest box curtains on the Chicken Chick blog.
leslea ~ My apologies! I just noticed your post about vent picking, which is what popped in my head about an hour later!

I also looked at the Chicken Chick's site earlier-- great minds thing alike! I think that I accidentally overlooked your post because pictures in the following post were of bradselig's silkie chicks, which distracted me.

I've "been meaning to" (unfortunately, that's my catchphrase

) make some nest box curtains since I first saw some in kabhyper's photos. At that time I thought she was just really into decorating her coop, --lol-- but she explained the reason for curtains.

I've also been meaning to say that your explanation for waiting until May for your chickens is just too logical and sensible for you to be a member of this thread! lol -jk! I need to add this to our Indiana Thread information: Must be willing to go off the deep end and let your chicken-loving emotions make decisions for you.

Btw, you had said that you like to watch Animal Planet's Brooder Cam. I've had this one bookmarked for a long time, but I always forget to look at it until evening after her hens have gone in.

kabhyper ~ That's a good point about a hen giving a head shake and splattering blood from a comb. I hadn't thought about that! Maybe minmin and Leahs Mom had the right idea after all! Although I checked them over, I was looking more closely at the "other end" as minmin guessed. I'll examine their combs more closely tomorrow.

I noticed that Adeline was in the tall grass bush today. As I was nearing the bush, Miss Nosey Nene ran in and ousted Adeline! I looked and didn't see any eggs, but I noticed some small fluffy feathers as if she was nesting. If she and Bonbon could control their maternal instincts until spring, that would be great.

I am soooo excited for you! What did you order!
Ignore SO, they will realize eventually its a major event!

Mine just rolls his eyes now.. if that

Sometimes just blood streaks is a new layer. Look at the vent.
If it helps track a hatch its a great tool!
the funny thing is, is that this ain't the first rodeo, so he knows how i get when chicks are anticipated...i just can't help myself! I am so very excited that SallyinIndiana graciously let me add 5 BLRW to her Welp order! I cannot wait!!!! I have been looking for them everywhere and either the minimum order is too much or no one has them. So i'm very excited!!

I totally feel you!!! 99 days for me.

Some people count down to vacations, I figured, why not?

yes, i think it serves a purpose for chickeners like us!! Jchny suggested that could also be used for incubation or broody count down!

O my. I saw on facebook a little bit ago that someone had some puppies and parrots they were selling on an indiana livestock and pet sale page.. I sent them a PM interested in the parrots, asking type of parrots and location. I got a long story about there puppies that I have no interest in at all and no location. I said I did not want puppies, I was interested in the parrots that they claimed ot have in their post. I got back I have pics. Do they not know the names of the types of birds they have? once again no location they just offer to send a pic, okay whatever. Then they say o ya, I moved to Atlanta, Georgia. Then why in the world post on an indiana page! They then proceeded to tell me they can ship the puppies. I am not interested in the puppies! Actually not interested in anything now. Then they send a picture. They are african gray congo parrots. I say I am not interested. They say they can ship them. I am not interested anymore!
