I had all but 2 of my pullets i got last winter molt and they are not a year old yet it was really strange and another reason i know why i'm still egg less. my RIR and CCL hens just finished their molts and did fine during the cold :)

So lily's eyes look awful. Everyone else is fine, but she is sneezing so I have everyone on durimycin 10. I bought vetricyn eye drops today and have put them in her eyes twice. Is there anything else i should be doing for her? She is eating and drinking fine. Her eyes just get closed up when they dry out and one is very puffy. No gross stuff out of them just puffy. I think dusting them for lice and opening the window in the den to clean out the box they are all in may have given her a chill it got pretty cold in there when i did that.

Quote: all but 2 and those were the ones for a friend. I'm glad they were the ones that made it though. I called today, but they want to wait and see if any of the chicks don't make it till Monday morning. Then they can request a reshipment all at once. While I feel bad for the ducklings of course, I really dislike that the USPS can't get them here alive the first time. It means a delay in when I start getting more duck eggs.
I have heard ducks don't ship well. Ugh thats so sad! Hope they get everything straight for you quickly.

Well, I knew having 3 roosters with 17 chickens this time would come. We've taken two out and put them in the brooder...24 sq'. Its in the un-heated garage so they should be fine temp wise. Only planning on keeping one. The hormones have started, the crowing is getting out of control, and my hens are getting hurt. I've had 2 with bloody combs in the last 3 days. And...the hens are now laying 0 eggs. The girls are not happy. I was really hoping to only have to get rid of one, but 2 are not nice so they both go. Hubby is going to do the deed for me, and I'll help clean them up. Not looking forward to this.

So happy to hear everyone is getting chick fever! I won't be getting any chicks this spring. 17 is good for my coup size. But I am getting excited for everyone else! Who knows, maybe I'll have another broody!

After the first time its not too bad. You gave them a great life, and it will sure give your hens some relief.

I might want another lavender hen..or 2! I am working on the pekins, may have a trio gone already. If I can even cut back to just a quad on them, that will make me happy!

Here's a link to a 30 second video of my three Silkies from bradselig. I took them out of the brooder to film, but they have wood chips stuck to them.

I think kaphyper asked this question not too long ago, but I don't remember the answer. The two blue silkies were sparring today like roosters do. Is that normal behavior for sweet 3 week old little girls?

I'm going to read the last 24 hours of the thread now.

I have some molting also . One was just about naked in that first artic weather we had and she did just fine, never even acted cold, though I really felt bad for her.

Hope she gets better, real soon !!

It could be or the dust may have caused her to have a reaction.
I have a BBW turkey hen that's sensitive to everything and was sneezing when they did the soybeans and corn by our house.
She has a swollen eye this week, so I put the terramyacin ointment on it. I changed their food since they were out of flock raiser

And I just know thats what did it. I had to buy a crumble, and even tho i ferment its dustier if its kinda dry.

Quote: 2 to 1 will work out well. My drake seems to not care about more than 1 hen at a time!
Fertility was poor in my eggs last year with 3 hens. I needed 1 more drake for sure.
Who knows, may have just been my drake too

bradselig ~ I understand that you visited so many attractive women that your head was spinning, but don't forget that you got to meet CRSelvey (Cheryl) who lives in Greencastle when she and little Savannah stopped by the convenience store cafe on the highway by "The Lounge." haha
thanks for calling me out and making me look like a.....butt! Lol. I would have swore I out her in the list! I even searched through out text messages to make sure I spelled her username correct! I guess after checking spelling, I just forgot to type it lol.

Thanks to Browncow15 for forcing me to get on!
Gosh...I haven't been on in Forever!  I miss chatting!  My phone app stopped working so I've just been reading!  Holidays just kicked my butt!  So much to do with 4 kids and all the "Stuff" to do to clear out space for all the new things our huge family spoils them with!  Geez!

Getting so pumped..as I'm sure so many of you are...Spring will be here before you know it and babies babies babies!  Can't wait!
***Looking for a few silkies if anyone has more available.***

If anyone recalls...my last silkie pullet that disappeared never returned...so I'm certain she was snatched up by something!  I have a little lone roo.  Lost my Sizzle hen to the cold and another little cock to a coon or opossum! Blah..and none of the 3 eggs I incubated were viable.  Sigh!!  My dog however has managed to kill 2 opossums in the past several months and ran off a hawk a few times!  Hasn't stopped it though...I've had 4 in the past month just picked off during the day, 3 of them were cockerals....so I'm certain it was the hawk, they were all smaller since they were younger.  I've been debating on buying a Pyr or LGD of some sort to live outside with them as our dog lives inside, even though he's a wonderful protector he's not outside all of the time to man a full time job!

I am super pumped that I managed to find homes for all my little boys and big boys!  Now I have my lone 2 LF's for breeding and getting my projects started back up!  BCM and Olive Eggers!  I have managed to keep all of my bantam cochins which I adore!  All of my girls are starting up some serious laying.  Getting about 13 eggs a day...on average 8!  One of my little pullets I hatched back in July/Aug started laying this week and it is the cutest darn little dark egg ever!  She's a mix of my SLW and BCM!  I really didn't expect it to be so dark but it is!  Love those dark eggs!  I never truly thought there was so much truth to the difference in their eggs but my family sure can.  I love to bake with them, I've found that's where I really can tell the difference.

Anyways, happy hatching!
i have more silkies in the hatcher!

Hi Everyone,

Its been a few days since I've been able to be on (thanks to a teenager using up all our monthly bandwidth, but that's another story).  I still haven't heard the update from Perdue, but I will let you all know as soon as I find out.  Right now they think its either a strain of Marek's or Blackhead disease which normally doesn't affect chickens like it did.  She also had parasites, so I have treated my group with Rooster Booster as suggested.

Yesterday had so many bright spots, but getting a call from Mother2Hens to meet and meeting bradselig, were right at the top.  What a great surprise :D .  It did nothing to slow down my desire for more chicks though.  I'm still trying to figure out a safe solution to that, but need more facts first.

I saw a question about the Mother Earth News Gardening app.  Here's what I know.  The pc version is free for the first 30 days and then about $25 per year.  I might use it for a couple of years until I get this thing down a bit more.  I was looking at their apps in the iTunes app store and that's where I found that there is an iPad app for $9.99.  Its much less than the PC version, but I don't know if that means it has less features or not. As I have already paid for the PC version, it would just be annoying to find out I could have done it for less.  Mine is a mini anyway, so its probably not as much fun to use as a large one when planning a garden.  They also have a fun little app called PickinChicken that can give you a quick rundown on different breeds.  I bought it before I found out that all of you can pretty much do the same thing :frow  and in a more fun way.  I really like the reviews of breeds available here, but it seems that everyone is in love with their own particular breed!!!

OK, I have to get off the computer before I get charged some crazy fee for overages.  I really miss having something more than satellite internet!!

It's was great getting to meet you and your daughter! It was a nice surprise!

You are doing exactly what I would do.

i have hade adult hens spar with roosters. My meanest chick so far was my white showgirl who would stretch out real tall and peck my hand. it turned turned out to be a hen as well.

As you stated I would gladly take any Roos back, but with the distance, I think it would be easier for you to rehome locally if you wanted. If not we can work something out ;)
