Maybe you could start their piano lessons early?
CRSelvey~ When I was looking for "Ideas to entertain chicks in a brooder" lol -- I found this link that has tons of ideas-- some maybe not so good. Toys for Pet Chickens - Squidoo --- one of the tips says: Rewarding a chicken for pecking at a piano key will quickly make the chicken realize that pecking on the piano will get them food. Hahaha I didn't realize that buying a toy piano for your chicken was so mainstream! My chickens have been neglecting their piano practice (no treats left on the piano), but I plan to work with them on their lessons.

bradselig ~ I understand that you visited so many attractive women that your head was spinning, but don't forget that you got to meet CRSelvey (Cheryl) who lives in Greencastle when she and little Savannah stopped by the convenience store cafe on the highway by "The Lounge." haha
thanks for calling me out and making me look like a.....butt! Lol. I would have swore I out her in the list! I even searched through out text messages to make sure I spelled her username correct! I guess after checking spelling, I just forgot to type it lol.

bradselig ~ Haha Well, CRSelvey called me crying because you forgot her name. I guess you spent too much time in "The Lounge" where you "had to park."

They are so cute!!

I guess I do have a little news, but it's silly. Yesterday was the first time I got to make chicken supply purchases as TSC.

Starter feed, a chick feeder, pine shavings, stuff like that. Really not a huge deal, I'm sure, but it was exciting for me. Got to stock up on all my stuff a little at a time so hubby doesn't feel too waylaid in the month before they arrive.
That's pretty smart to slowly and steadily make some purchases without raising any red flags . . . lol . . . Desensitization of your "other half." It's a common occurrence among our thread members!

hi, I'm in S. In., near Louisville.
Just read Carol Deppe's book "The Resilient Gardener and have fallen for her description of the Holderread Anconas.
I'd love to start an Ancona flock from someone local - anyone have some?

SuburbanMom ~ Welcome to the Indiana Thread!
I am catching up on posts from the past few days, so I'm not sure if this has been suggested: Click on the Indiana Members link at the bottom of my post. The list shows where members live and what types of birds, etc. they have.

just wanted to share pictures of these very very rare chickens lolololol the top one is our "chill" border collie in my signature. He is very content laying at my feet bought he thought it would be more appropriate for a couch picture. The bottom one is of our lab/border collie mix. For some reason she only likes side profile pictures because every time i tried to take a picture she would turn her head just at the last second. Hope everyone is having a good weekend so far.

I went to orschlens in greenfield today just to "scout" things out. No chicks yet!!! But its for the best because i have the 5 BLRW coming at the end of Feb, can't wait!!!!!!!!!! Did however pick up some yummy wild rice soup while i was there and made it tonight for dinner and ohhhh was it good!! Now i'm off to read the book that i got there as well.

I love your post/photos! I've never heard of a "chill" border collie! They're one of my favorite dogs. Your mix is a handsome woman! And it cracks me up that she prefers being photographed on a certain side of her face-- just like a movie star. haha Your evening of wild rice soup and a book sounds wonderful! Thanks for sharing.

kabhyper~ You are SO crafty and resourceful!

I just hope his dog friends don't see him in his snowflake PJs!

These collars you make are so nice!!!

Nice pics and videos everyone! Lots of exciting stuff happening here recently. Tomorrow I pick up a dozen free laying hens from a friend that are still in there "prime". And I got an iPhone 4 today! Would of loved to get a 5s but hey I guess better than nothing. I am using it right now. All the chickens are doing good too! Hopefully this will be our last Arctic blast coming next week, because boy do I have a lot of stuff to do!
CCCHICKENS ~Great news! You can also take photos and videos on your iPhone, so we'll be expecting some!
Thanks to Browncow15 for forcing me to get on!
Gosh...I haven't been on in Forever! I miss chatting! My phone app stopped working so I've just been reading! Holidays just kicked my butt! So much to do with 4 kids and all the "Stuff" to do to clear out space for all the new things our huge family spoils them with! Geez!

Getting so pumped..as I'm sure so many of you are...Spring will be here before you know it and babies babies babies! Can't wait!
***Looking for a few silkies if anyone has more available.***

If anyone recalls...my last silkie pullet that disappeared never returned...so I'm certain she was snatched up by something! I have a little lone roo. Lost my Sizzle hen to the cold and another little cock to a coon or opossum! Blah..and none of the 3 eggs I incubated were viable. Sigh!! My dog however has managed to kill 2 opossums in the past several months and ran off a hawk a few times! Hasn't stopped it though...I've had 4 in the past month just picked off during the day, 3 of them were cockerals....so I'm certain it was the hawk, they were all smaller since they were younger. I've been debating on buying a Pyr or LGD of some sort to live outside with them as our dog lives inside, even though he's a wonderful protector he's not outside all of the time to man a full time job!

I am super pumped that I managed to find homes for all my little boys and big boys! Now I have my lone 2 LF's for breeding and getting my projects started back up! BCM and Olive Eggers! I have managed to keep all of my bantam cochins which I adore! All of my girls are starting up some serious laying. Getting about 13 eggs a day...on average 8! One of my little pullets I hatched back in July/Aug started laying this week and it is the cutest darn little dark egg ever! She's a mix of my SLW and BCM! I really didn't expect it to be so dark but it is! Love those dark eggs! I never truly thought there was so much truth to the difference in their eggs but my family sure can. I love to bake with them, I've found that's where I really can tell the difference.

Anyways, happy hatching!
ellymayRans ~ Great to hear an update from you (thanks for using your cattle prod, brown cow!)
Little Ameraucana Mom ~ I can see why everyone has been drooling over these chocolate/dun Bantam Ameraucanas you posted a few days ago! So beautiful!

He is very short and has a Napoleon complex. He digs holes in the yard and tries for hours in the summer to catch frogs and fish in the koi pond, butwe love him anyway. He hates me when I do things like this to him though....
oh i love his jammies!!!!!! did you make them urself????? he makes it look so adorable!!!

i say that he is "chill" because he very much likes to lie around. he can get excited though and when he does, he bounces like a Tigger high up in the air! i have been around other border collies that were high strung...and i know that they are a herding breed. He does like to play but gets tired easily with playing fetch. His sister on the other hand is a little more high strung and very intelligent. She is a frisbee-freak and was trained as a puppy to catch frisbee competively. if she would have let me photograph her whole face you could see that her face is two-toned kinda like her brother's but she is a gray color. we named her Luna, because of the half-shaded face she has.it was really prominent when she was a pup. Her brother's name is Freckles and he was a rescue and already 2 yrs old so we really couldn't change his name. we love them both and they great dogs---although when baby chicks are around, they start fixating and licking lips so that is going to have to change!
