I would love some Marans. Not right now though. Too cold.

Thanks for showing those! That may work for what I was looking for.......
I was just searching, too, for something to use to sift the large lumps out of my wood ash before adding it to the dust bath area. It usually has some various debris in there that needs sifting and I'm too unmotivated to make anything. I was looking at these which are garden seives/sifters. Folks use them to sift compost or to get rocks or other items out of the garden:

Now I have to go look at those sand sifter thingies!
CRSelvey ~ What does BLM stand for? Black Market?I always have eggs but i have chicks coming out the ears right now. Im mostly selling hatching silkie eggs but if someone wants a box of chocolates to hatch i would save the mixed ines back for them. Otherwise they go in the fridge.
kabhyper ~ I'll take a box of (candy) chocolates to eat!

I might have to remove all the sand, power wash, and replace all the sand just to make it look good again. That's probably a good idea in any case.
I LOVE the idea of the gold mining pans. We actually did have many of those when I was growing up....my dad was a geologist for BLM, so we were always out doing stuff like that.

Absolutely! It is a great lice/mite preventative used in the dust bath. In addition to prevention, it can also be used to treat if needed. @armorfirelady used it exclusively to rid her flock of mites that they got near the end of summer using no chemical intervention at all. (Maybe she'll stop in and tell her story.) It actually suffocates the little buggers.
Here are a couple of articles.
I am careful not to use too high a percentage in the dust bath, but I do put a bit in as a preventative. And they will eat some too as it has certain vitamins and minerals they can use....and it's not harmful to the environment or good bacteria like DE can be. (I don't use DE around my chickens at all. I do put a bit in the grain bags to help prevent the hatching of weevils only.)

Also...be sure NOT TO USE ANY ASH FROM BURNING TREATED LUMBER. IT IS POISON AND CAN KILL LIVESTOCK!
I saved it back. I will maybe hatch a couple with it. Whenever she lays again.kabhyper ~ The mix of Blue Cochin and Silver Laced Wyandotte sounds interesting . . . aren't you curious? Don't you think you should hatch that unique little chick?![]()
Things are looking up for you!! You're now an alpaca health care provider, you cured your silkie's eye, and Lavender laid her first egg ---even though she's been a mother already!![]()

Are you the one who mixed up extra paint and created a new shade of green that you used to paint the interior of the coop? I remember someone doing that, which was a good idea, I thought . . . maybe a poopy color would have blended better.![]()
I agree with what you said the other day about being able to use a power washer-- or even a hose-- again! Since our hens use our deck like it's an extension of their coop, we usually keep it hosed off. Now it's dotted (large dots) with frozen chicken poop. Lovely. I use a large hoe to scrape them off, but it's kind of hoe-p-less. Sorry, I didn't plan that pun. I inherited that disorder, and I usually try to keep it under control.![]()
Aww that's sad about the broody. I am eagle eye with mine, or they will forget to eat. They take it deathly seriously. Unfortunately literally sometimes. When the eggs from me hatch. they may be a little wobbly for a few days. Meaning they may need hobbles. The last hatch I had they took a few days to get their land legs. They will be fine. The five that had the wobbles that I have are little crazy beasties now. Let me know if you need help with them. I think they will probably be fine, just a heads up. good luck! Thats a lot of silkies!!! lolHello from crazy Chicken hatching nut!
KAB: you will be happy to hear all 9 eggs are thriving and show very clear growth!!! Yippee!!!! I have a feeling though I'm definitely going to have way too many Little fluffy butts hatching though!
Is friend of mine went to her coop this afternoon and found her Broody Splash Silkie dead on the nest. After checking the eggs they were still quite warm so she called me and asked me to come get them and put them in my bator...if I wanted to try t hatch them. So guess what... 9 turned into 19!!! She also gave me three d'Uncle Bantam eggs (I didn't spell that right did I). I think I need to build a brooder before they hatch! I don't think I'll have an issue selling the chicks that are "extra" though. People round these part ain't never seen the likes of a fluffy little chicken like these here Silkies! Lol
