INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well it's not an injury after all I found another one just like her and this afternoon MJ's has spread to the other side of her face. and I have others that are showing some same signs. So UPSET.
Oh no! What chickens are getting sick? Are all of your chickens together? Are they all getting goopy eyes? What other symptoms?
You poor thing!

And the poor chickens! Hope some of our members can offer suggestions!

Chick rookie, it sounds just like what mine had and a few other people. Get the Tylan or use the terramycin. If you arent a needle phobe, injecting the tylan into the chest muscle for 5 days works faster. Definitely use the saline and neosporine. Put your whole flock on water soluble antibiotics now and separate and treat all of the ones with symptoms with the stronger antibiotics and eye stuff. It may take a couple weeks but they will recover.
This is lilys eye when she was recovering

This is how she normally looks healthy. She is back to the healthy version now ;) Don't freak out, just treat them all. Warm weather is around the corner, it will help a lot. The avian vet told me it is from being cooped up and she has seen a lot of it this year.

Chick rookie, also if you can keep the dust down at all it helps immensly. I put an air purifier in with my silkies and they quit sneezing that day. I had them all on duramycin 10 when Lily was sick.

I was going to go directly to Lilmizcareall's home then to Pick up th chicks n eggs then to SallyinIndiana's to pick up the ducklings. We hadn't really planned to meet as a group. So unless they say differently I guess that would be the plan.

minmin ~ When are you coming to Indiana? I thought you had talked about coming to Indiana to get silkies from bradselig. Anyway, it would be fun to meet you just to say hi. CRSelvey and I recently met at a gas station while waiting for bradselig to bring silkies to me after his stop at Little Ameraucana Mom's.
Hey ya'll! I am loving this warmth. The mud, not so much.

My EE, Einstein has a boyfriend! He has been coming over from the property next door, crossing the creek to come visit her. I believe he is a Marans. He is huge and has seen a few winters because I noticed his comb is not just one big nub.

He kind of growls at me when I come to close to either of them. I had a talk with him. Told him he'd have to be nice otherwise he's getting the boot!

At least E has company until the chicks get bigger!

amwchicken ~ One of these days, I'll write and illustrate the story of Einstein. She is an intriguing chicken! Try to take some pictures when her beau comes a calling. haha

M2H I'd love to meet you but I have such limited time! The trip is over 500 miles round trip, and my grandchildren (14&17) will be attempting to take care of my doggie and birds alone. I will be in Indy on Tuesday eve, and be picking things up at various locations Weds morn. They go t school at 7a so I hav t get back ASAP or my poor dog is going t blow up!!! Lol. Plus if the bitties haven't all hatched out I will have t be here t keep track of which ones hatch. My trip has been arranged and rearranged so many times I'm just going t play it by ear as to what time I get where to pick up what...lol. Anybody want to add anything speak now or forever hold your peace!

She may have been injured and got an infection, so either way the saline, ointment and antibiotics will help her. When she heals up, I would bring one of your other hens into the house with her. Let them bond and then put them back out with the flock. You may have to do the playpen method (cage her in the coop so the other chickens can see but not touch) for awhile, maybe with a buddy, until they lose interest in picking on her. My large flock, fourteen of them, have been in a 33 x 25 area of the pole barn with our alpacas since november. In order to keep them busy, we give them a flock block, and scratch twice a day. They don't pick on each other at all. 3 roos and 11 hens. I think chickens get bored easily, and your little hen may have made an easy target. If you have to keep her and another hen inside until you have grass outside again. Maybe the flock will be so busy they won't notice her. If you can see which one is bullying the others, separate it for awhile to knock it down the pecking order a bit.

yep I will have to do that, I just don't understand why all the sudden they or 1 is going after her, she has been locked up with them for a mth, due to the weather, it gets nice out and I let them out to free range and this happens!! Just don't get it and she was higher in the pecking order too??? :idunno  got to figure out something wet to feed her that I can give her. cause she cant use her beek?

Try making some fermented feed. I had an Isa Brown that had cross beak she would awkwardly gobble that stuff up!

Chick days temptation #1: successful! Stopped at rural king for feeders and waterers. I was tempted to get 10 cornish cross that would have been free after rebate. Also tempted by the light brahma pullets . Regardless i stayed strong and only bought dry goods

You must teach me this discipline, how do you do it?

I don't think I read this right. So you left without chickens? It doesn't compute. I'll re-read it. I'm sure I read it wrong.
Ha silly me, no one leaves chick day without chicks. I apologize Brad, I was sure it said you left without chicks.

@PimentoPlymouth I have a jersey giant and she lays around 5 or 6 eggs a week I would say. They are very pretty and my jg is very sweet.

A few nights ago we were driving home from a 4-H thing and saw deer, an opossum, either a cat or raccon, and a fox. I was worried my mom wouldn't get any sleep worrying about a fox getting the chickens. I know they can be harmful to chickens but it was so beautiful.
