INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

a very big thank-you to SallyinIndiana for graciously letting me add to her Welp order!!!
(here comes the bragging!!!)

BLRW pullets (pic heavy)
Baby 1--she get falling asleep
Baby 2--she's the smallest, and i really like her coloring so far
Baby 3-- nice pose!
Babies 4 & 5--they have similar coloring and i think they were having a secret coversation
group shot!!!
Why must Hobby Lobby torment me so!!!! Why are they trying to enable my chicken sickness??????? i was able to walk out of there chicken less, but it wasn't easy!

Did you only get one egg out of those? It may look like a SLW, but it could be an EE x SLW. If it is, it will look like Cricket or Pickles. Blue laced.
yup just the one. 2 were infertile, 2 had blood ring, and the one was a late quitter. I kinda hope it is a mix as pickles and cricket are beautiful! I'm sure the poor hatch had to do with me having to wait about a week to out them in too. I miscalculated the incubator space.
MIL babies are starting to internally pip!!!! I went over there and took Ashes out to potty and eat and looked at the eggs. It is day 19. One is pipped inside!! So no more going off the nest for her. She was exceptionally perturbed at me tonight, so I knew something was up. I will go back over in the morning and check on her. They live right in front of us. lol. BTW we watched Gravity in 3D tonight. It was really neat! If you all haven't seen it, you should.
how exciting!

they look great! I can't wiat to go down to pick up my chicks and meet SallyinIndiana!

Just wanted to give a public thanks to @SallyinIndiana and @bradselig for the various samples of bands you both sent. I finally got some that I'm liking for my bigger girls without having to spend a lot of money on "hit and miss" buying.

Brad - still hoping for a link showing those hinged ones you found :D

Your welcome! And I completely forgot about trying to find that link again. I'll try to get on that!

I have caught another coon tonight. This is the third one this week hoping to start thinning them out. I put out a live trap and put some food scraps in there and caught the first two. This time I just set the live trap and caught a smaller one. These things must be reproducing faster than im catching them. Oh yea i have caught the neighbors cat twice also. That gets old fast also
rant.gif
Ugh..RANT!!!!!!...
old.gif
I get very ANGRY when I trap cats. Animal control wont pick them up, still throwing a big fit over that!
somad.gif
Its a domestic animal, why NOT?!? We have so many "generous people" that feel we need lots of cats abandoned at our farm
smack.gif
I would like to take every one of those "people" and dump THEM in a cornfield for a night.
HORRIBLE abuse, take a house raised cat and toss it out in these temps, no idea how to feed itself, let alone protect itself! Some of them have been declawed too. Horrible!
I try to let any stay that are not poultry aggressive, but with all the cold temps the poor things have little chance to survive. I can't keep cats indoors due to moms health issues, nor do I want another "pet cat". I have rehomed several but you run out of "takers" eventually. Its just plain sickening and breaks my heart

I woke up to find six little chipmunked fluffy faced chicks in our livingroom!!! Dad stopped by TSC and got some for me. The first thing I heard concerning them?
My youngest sister:
'Have you picked out which one your gonna shpw? Can I hold them now?' ~ let it just be said my sister misunderstood what my dad meant by 'they can hold and handle chicks except for the ones you set aside as showing birds' - paraphrased but still.
big_smile.png
I'll have to post pics of the fluffy guys. I too have a darker one but I think its just dark brown, not black its got lighter along its wings and such I think. But they were adorable!!! Now to make sure the sis's wash hands before smuthering my new birds lol I'm gonna be a helicopter mother with these broods ohvey.
So how's everybody elses chicks doing?
Awesome, congrats on the babies!!! My 28 pullets are doing great! I think i have a few roos in the mix too
big_smile.png
I may still need: BR roo, JG and WL roos.. Too soon to know for sure. I am soo happy with Roscoe, my little RIR roo from SallyIN. He is a charmer, and a little sweetie so far
love.gif
. And Penelope, my new BLP roo from racin is a just lovely sweet roo, and my girls snuggle right up to him. I checked on them tonight and he had a hen on either side, snuggled up tight!

So I opened the locked down bator!!! I misted the 6 eggs left and rescued two little fur balls last night. No peeps on the other eggs

I added a little more water. The heat and humidity goes back up pretty quick in the hovabator Genisus. I'm going to leave the eggs back in lock down until I smell odor or see more chicks. Now back to my first ever hatches Birchen Marans with feathered legs from the one and only Brad!! Thanks buddy.
Let me know if I got some show winners here

There are two pics each. The first one was the first to hatch, and I love the little mustache lol, and the second one is who woke me up at 1am to say "hello world chirp chirp" over and over! They both are doing good in the brooder with the Buff's and EE'rs. Both eating and drinking also.
They are precious, Brads eggs always produce some lovely chicks
wink.png
I have 9 lil silkies I still need to share pics of! Most are looking to be blue or lavender, but there is a splash possibly and a partridge I think too!

Ah, Nice.
smile.png
I just got half a dozen 'Ameracauna' chicks from TSC so I can't wait to go home to night and get pics. Their soo adorable. Atleast all of them have fluffy faces with two I couldn't quite tell and all had the chipmunk pattern but one was atleast the biggest and was darker. So happy my spring plans are rolling now! I've got a bator and brooder and now chicks!! Content now.
smile.png
Aww babies!!! Can't wait to see your hatching pics too!

Caught up! We've had a busy week! Last Sunday I spent all morning fixing the pop door on the coop, I keep forgetting to get pics though :( Its been needing to be done for a while but a cyote wandering our property in the middle of the morning prompted DH to give me time to go do it!
I also picked up these cute things from Sally this week!

And got to meet Jchny2000 when I picked up a bator from her yesterday! SO excited to try my hand at some hatching!
It was so nice to meet you! I hope you have good luck with hatching. The bators have hatched a LOT of eggs for me, well over 1,000 last year!
Some were quitters, or infertile.. but they are great to start with! If you master the LG hatching you will have no problems with a better "bater" later on.
Main thing for me was drafts in the room. I wish I would have thought of our dry pantry sooner, may have had better luck.

Quote: LOL yep, I have had some very interesting colors hatch last year!

We cleaned out the duck brooder last night. That was a mess and moving it up out of the basement made the smell worse. But at least it is out of the house for now. As soon as warmer weather hits, the ducks are first out of the basement. So stinky.
They sure can be! I have my scovies in the porch until this last cold blast ends. UGH am really ready for spring. What a mess.
My oldest drake Stanley has hurt his foot, so he will be staying in longer. He is just huge so its hard to say what he did, poor guy.
Looking at him, I can't find anything wrong, but he keeps lifting it like it hurts.

55 degrees here today and tomorrow we're expecting freezing rain, then several inches of snow. I assume everyone north of me will have it worse-- except maybe not the first layer of ice. I'm taking a little break while trying to make the most of being outside with my hens. Hope everyone has a good Saturday!
yippiechickie.gif
UGH watching the radar now, so far we are getting nothing...
fl.gif
hope it misses us!

Quote: No kidding! You tell DH NO CLEANING POOP for u! Keep that baby safe
hugs.gif
and you also!

Quote: Awesome post!!!!! Thanks for sharing this, really made me rethink broodies!

Just got back from a trip into Plainfield. They have their chicks now. Got them earlier this week and only had red sex links, and RIR left. They all had the starts of some nice wing feathers so I would guess them at 5 to 7 days old already. I'm pretty excited, our Austrolourps should be here thursday!!!
yesss.gif
Congrats, its so exciting! I have babies all over the house lol, my parents are loving it.
They both love to hold the chicks and coo at them! I have 5 brooder boxes going ugh! The white leghorns are really growing up fast..

This is 1 of the RK ISA's that I got cause they were injured, she still has to be by herself cause they are still picking on her, So she gets to free range the chick room. and ride around on my shoulder, she took a shower with me today, I have a seat in the tub and she was bathing in the spray of the shower too. She started sitting in the clothes hamper and flew ( if you could call it that ) into the clear shower curtain.
I think I may have a bit of a problem with her come time to go out to the coop. She will call for me ( loudly ) in the middle of the night, and I have to go spend at least 30 min. with her before I can go back to bed.
My baby roo Roscoe, a RIR doesn't "fit" in any of my brooders. He is my best buddy right now.
Too old, young or aggressive.. so he gets to live in a crate in my den.
I am enjoying him too, he is quite a personable lil guy!

I've got a pretty good mixed flock of layers going. Red sex Link, GLW, SLW, Black Australorp, Buff Orpington, Birchen Maran, EE, and in the incubator are BPR & RIR! I'm hoping to acquire some BLRW in the near future. Is their a breed that I am missing in my flock LF egg layers? I want to end up with a good mixed flock with lots if beautiful colors running through the yard.
Oh you need a white layer! Why not a polish or another fun breed.. When I have customers visit, they are just infatuated with the polish.

I knew this day would come. Our neighbor asked if we could muzzle our rooster. He said it was waking him up. Which I'm sure it is. I have no idea what his sleep schedule is, but let's face it buddy. I'm not getting rid of him, because of you...
He has knocked on our door twice to ask who was parked in his parking spot, on a public street. Cleaned his gutters out into our yard and on top of our car. Complained about our car that was not running(public health cited us, yes we were at fault) buried my driveway while digging his car out from the snow.
He rents, I own. If he wants a battle... not that I'm going to actively participate, he can have it.
Ugh it's just so frustrating. He is obviously not normal and looking for trouble...
I just want some backyard birds.
Tell him that the roo is your pet! he is NOT ever leaving!! I despise rude neighbors... We are very lucky to have our one neighbor north of us that are wonderful friendly people.
If you can keep a roo per the local ordinance I would sure be ignoring him! I guess I must sleep sound, I never hear mine till I get outdoors for the day. He sounds pretty inconsiderate. And really, I enjoy the sound of the crows anyway! They are happy, and that's what its all about for me.
