INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I will have some fertile hatching eggs in a few days. I don't plan to set them just now. The rooster would be a HRIR while the hens would be 1 Barred Rock, 1 Red Star, and 1 production red. Would anyone be interested in them? If not we will eat them. As a family we eat lots of eggs. But broody season is coming up and if someone wanted a few barnyard flock eggs, I would be willing to part with them 2 for $1. I mark the eggs too so you would know the layer.

Got a few questions for ya ( anyone ) 1 Does anyone know how I can skip the 60 day thing for my place to be safe again? I really miss having chickens and my own eggs!!
2 the vet is going to do test on this chicken that showed up next week. If it comes back neg. would you have her tested again before my chicks go out? or do you think it will be a waste of money?
3 how old do you think is the best age for hens to raise their own babies?

These are questions I have been looking for and cant find the answers too.

Not sure what you're asking there. Are you asking that if they go broody when they are young should you let them set? (I'm guessing that's what you mean since you can't make a hen go broody...they choose when they're going to do that and I assume that it's a hormone-induced thing.)

My broody girl had her first at 8 mos. I thought that was young. Had only been laying shortly. But she did a great job and has raised a second clutch as well.

sorry should have said it different, but yea that's what I was asking.. lol ok just didn't know, last summer I didn't let 2 of my girls set cause I thought they were too young. This year if I have any that go broody I will let them, maybe that will help with my chicken math addiction????

I would not skip the 60 day thing, you possibly get yourself right back in the situation you were in before. I would have her tested before to be sure.

I have a plan for my egg laying operation. I'm wanting to wind up around 30 layers. So that's why I'm picking up chicks everywhere! On the way to BigR I told my wife I won't pick up anymore chicks unless they are BLRW (I'm pretty sure no feed store gets them) or a leghorn breed! So my Son and Daughter run back to the chicks and my daughter comes back and says "guess what? They have White Leghorns!!" My wife looks at me and just shakes her head lol! We now have a white egg layer in the group or I should say 4 of them! And I couldn't resist these cute little grayish colored EE'ers. I am now done with chicks and I will finish out my layers with the hatching eggs this spring! Oh and yes they are all pullets!

Looks like we are heading to Warsaw's BigR!
I'm told "NO MORE CHICKS!!!" Haha we will see

They got them in yesterday but due to late arrival they had alot of problems alot of Cornish was dead and others wasn't doing to go. They pretty much just left them in the pens and started selling today. Im picky on my chicks and tell them exactly which ones i want. How they are doing better today.

Ya they all looked great, I picked out the ones I wanted. 4 white leghorns and two cute grayish EE's, I'm hoping they are leghorns. They were with Austra whites? Those were yellow w/ black specks and the leghorns were all yellow. I hand picked them all. But anyway the chicks looked pretty healthy and active.
