INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I know someone out there needs a couple black cochin bantam hens. They are right around six months old. They either just started laying or will anyday now. I'm getting some new little bantam eggs that are from these two or their sisters. Let me know, I might even be able to be convinced to trade these for something else!!
I have a pair of black frizzled Cochin boys that would go great with them!! I hatched back in August. They are just starting to mount. .only keeping the girl with parents. I do love the breed though and love the frizzle! If anyone is interested let me know.

My alpine doe gave birth to 2 kids today, both bucklings. She is not doing well and milk has not dropped

I have both kids in the house on the bottle. Very concerned for my doe. She appears to have injured a front leg.
Shadow is a very calm and gentle girl, will try to milk her tomorrow so the babies get colostrum.
Way behind on our thread. will try to catch up later.

I've seen several people with ducklings with their chicks...my husband and son have a duckling deal (hard work at school until Spring Break)...what do I need to know about brooding ducklings and chicks together? Is there a certain thread (haven't seen a detailed one yet) that already discusses this?
They are ok till the drakes mature. Drakes trying to mate a chicken hen is BAD, their "plumbing" doesn't work and can kill the hen from internal damages.

Quote: Of course we do! Glad to see you back. Incubating will make you nuts so let it be what it is.
Too funny about your roadrunner, but that one shows personality.

Just moved all the chicks outside into a huge brooder!! Well not all of them

I got a few more zipping right along!!!!

Well we got three chicks out, and I believe the rest of the eggs have peeped!
I finally caught a complete hatch on vid!!
But my phone won't let me upload it. so far this hatch is doing great
ugh i often have the same issues. Pictures are a real pain for me, rarely works.

18'6" x 19' yard for up to 6 Silkies, Is that going to be enough room with a 49" t x 36" w x 42" L house ?

the front can be removed in good weather. the back is where we will put outside nesting box, the whole house will be raised 2' and 1 window on the east side and 1 on the west side. o and of course painted. everything was recycled. All suggestions welcome and please if you see a problem let me know. The fence is Small whole wielded wire 4' h. with a 1 x 6 across the top, the front view you can see the 1 x 6. This will be the permanent pen when my ground is safe again.
Looks very good!

I got my first egg from my Aker line White Plymouth Rock today. She may have been laying before I got her, I didn't ask. I was smashed though, I am going to venture to guess she smashed it with her huge feet lol
Awesome, more to come then!

Travis (DH) was with me when I went into TSC today. I have 18 silkies, 4 Silver laced wyandottes, 2 RIR, 2 LF blue cochins, 1 minorca, 1 australorp, 10 EE's including the mixes , 1 minorca slw mix, and 2 khaki campell ducklings. So 41 before I went to get chick grit today. I wish I would have taken a picture of his face when I insisted I needed a polish chick in the mixed bantams. He knows there is a six chick minimum. All he did was sigh, and when we got home said "so that's close to 50 now right?" LOL I actually felt really badly. He likes them, although I think he is going to sign me up for Animal hoarders or My Strange Addiction or Intervention or any other show on A&E. I am fully prepared for a camera crew to show up on my doorstep.
I can relate! I thought did be on big trouble when I brought home 7 chicks this time but he just took a breath and went back to his office. I think he's resigned to his fate. Besides with two of them being bantams they really only count as one right?
whew, caught up! Looking forward to the next few days and the fantastic weather! Have a months worth of yard work alone. First thing I want to do is clear all the small trees/brush around the pond, and get back to fence repairs. Doing a complete cleanup on all of the houses and coops. My "wild bunch" hens have taken to laying on my porch lately! So they will all be getting wing trims. The group will not stay cooped since the top of my run collapsed. Between the snow and large tree branches that fell on it my egg coop isn't doing well at all. I have a free day friday, has become "date day" and Dad spends the day with Mom. I am proud to say my parents are married well over 50 years, and still look at one another like teenagers in love :love He takes her to dialysis, and then they go out for an early dinner. I worry about him driving at 80, but they do need their time alone. He is still waiting to hear about his heart valve. Moms PT is going very well, we think she may not need the knee surgery at all.
That is such a sweet story. My grandparents were married for 63 years and were very much in love. It's a good example for the rest of us kids. I wish we had more.

I hope she's doing ok now. I don't know anything about does but my dr said oatmeal and stout beer helped :idunno. Beer probably isn't a good idea. I took some more baby pics today.

I think this one is an OEGB (still guessing)

I think this one is a Mille Fleur D'uccle but it also resembles the buff Brahma pics I've found. It has a very upright carriage.

The Welsummers :love Well it's official. The roo on my avatar is going to my friends freezer camp this morning. I opened the chicken door and he bit me immediately. Normally he lets the girls out first, but not then. I don't want to worry about this every time I go to the garden. I like spending time with the girls and he's sucking all the fun out of it. :barnie I hope you all have a better day than him!

Been lurking this site for over a year. I started with chickens last year, raising RIRs for eggs. Now I have ISA Browns, RIRs, Buff Orpingtons, and Cornish X. Will be adding in some decoration birds for my wife with an assortment of Crescent tops and banties. Looking to add some Easter Eggers, Welsummers, and/or Marans. Will also be adding a couple turkeys come May. Overall, I'm looking at having ~100+ birds. Half will be egg layers. The other half decor and meat.

From Ft. Wayne.

welcome to our thread!! Glad you jumped in!
We have many of the same breeds.

I had another chick hatch, There is a piece of connective tissue attached to what looks like the rear end area. I want to open it up and help the little fuzz butt out but I think it will pull away from it. the chick seems to be pretty strong and is trying to move away from it??
any ideas on what to do with this one?
Wait it out. You can dab warm water with a cotton swab if it causes a problem.

Over the past year or so, every time I had a question or wanted to research something about chickens, this site showed up.

We've been having problems with predators lately since 5 of my dogs were stolen. I also raise and show APBTs, and someone decided they needed them more than me and helped themselves to over 4.5yrs of my breeding program. We got my brood back; it was found running around on the southside of town of Ft. Wayne. I think me and a buddy are going to use a couple of my roosters, put into dog crates, to draw out anything tonight on my property. Hopefully, we'll be having raccoon and/or opposum stew tomorrow.
